100 Cold Calls - About to start right now, follow me...

Ok, I am no expert on cold calling, but I am ready to go on 100 dials.

I have a list of people in front of me and my aim is to see whether or not they want to come to a seminar to learn how to generate more leads for their business.

Here we go ... I shall report as I go along.

Hope this is useful.

Bear in mind that it is of course the summer holidays in the UK and many business owners will take their children away. You should know this:p

Well cold calling can be very tough, and very often you will have to adjust your script, in order to get better results......
I have done a lot of cold calling during my earlier sales jobs...
have you done any moderation in your original script? and what is your script?

Not every customer is going to say yes... 90% will say no, but cold calling is the way to uncover the ones that will say yes. Just keep going Chris, you will find them.

            Chris -

Here is another way that will cut down the time to call all those people.

Call your local Chamber of Commerce is what we call it here...and offer to do a educational seminar for them on how to get more leads. Now you have to give them alot of meat and then pitch at the end, but you can get out to 100's of businesses in some places in ONE CALL.

Another great place....ANY association of <inset business type here>. Do the same thing...offer education.

Last one for you....Here is a GREAT one.....BNI International - Business Networking and Referrals. Of course ANY business networking group will work too. they have education directors for each group...call and see if you can present for FREE and ask if the small pitch at the end is cool...again bunches of businesses there looking to refer business back and forth.

Now you don't have to call 100...just call 20 and REACH 500 businesses.

            Work smarter not harder

Yeah, that's the kind of stuff I'm talking about. I don't see why people think working harder for their money makes them heroes.

At the end of the day it's about profits in your pocket.

Having said that, I am creating a new system for cold calling. Just because in desperate times, this may be one of the ways to move forward. So because I'm a marketing genius, I will do this so people can benefit from it.

However, I definitely don't believe in promoting a seminar strictly by cold calling. Too much wasted energy, and more importantly, TIME.

That's one way to think about it, but the issue I have with BNI is that the one's i've been to are not full of the kind of people that would pay £500 a month + to get ranked on Google and increase traffic and profits. Maybe that's just what i've found.

Cold calling has enabled us to get some that pay over 6000 a month.

For me, you need to be doing it all. There is no magic bullet.

Yes I know that a lot will say no.... I was merely pointing out, that when talking to people, the results can be drastically improved, if persuasive/hypnotic language pattern are used, (as in sales letters), so the message also is delivered "under the radar" :-)

But I agree, anyway its a numbers game

just tuppence worth, I run a telemarketing team as part of our overall offering.

On seminars - our experience is that only 70% tops actually turn up having committed and even at that you need to follow though with nudge like emaill reminder etc before event.

Also as part of a large project that I hope to work with some warriors on I have my guys verifying our data. We have around 4m B2B data records. If you run short of data or need some new targeted stuff give me a shout.

First full week of kids school holidays in the UK - this week and next week there are more people on vacation than at any other time.

Have you thought about MLMers - Kleeneze etc. reps rather than just small local business owners? They are always looking for leads and are used to seminars - just a thought.

    Chris,

It's a numbers game. I've gotten several long term clients from cold calling the last few years, so I KNOW it works! You definitely can't give up

My SEO/Web Design business has kept me very busy and I'm at a point that I need dedicated telemarketers and I'm hiring several telemarketers as we speak because I know it works.

    Good luck!

      Excellent stuff Ahmad.

It's a funny thing that some SEO guys take offence that they should do telemarketing. Reasoning that their skills should get their SEO agancy found and customers beating a path do their door. But it is still a young market and many business owners have not heard/do not understand SEO much less searching for it.

This is compounded by their web guy saying he has "done the seo" - meaning he submitted the homepage to Google and maybe even Bing !!

Hey Barry, yeah the SEO guys that are NOT cold calling are definitely missing out on new business. I get business from my website (which is ranking pretty well in G) and other marketing sources (one being cold calling).

Ok, in summary it was a horrendous day to get hold of people. But i'm not one for excuses so I just carried on regardless...

    60 Dials

45 Not at the their desk. Call back later.
10 People said NO... they are stacked out/other excuse.
1 Person said NO... "I want to close my business down".
4 People said yes they would come.

So the big takeaway here is that you should try calling at a different time.

In another thread ( Jobless Dad Revisited ) the original poster explains that he found that between 1pm and 3pm on Saturdays worked best. Maybe try that?

Keep at it. You're making great progress.

BNI is GOLD....I know they will have a chapter near you....that will be the best call you make...to largest one here in our small town (and there are 3 chapters because they only allow one person to join per chapter per type of business) has like 50 members...all business owners....ummm hello...EASY picking's.

Also, don't forget about real estate MLS associations, and the other associations in your town of bars or restaurants or the other ones.

Also SBA (small business admin)...there is another place to do education.

If you have a school (like a college)...they all have "continuing education" you can offer for a FEE and then you can show the businesses how to do this or that...or just offer FREE and get the referrals.

      Have fun!

Here are few cold calling tips:

    1) Focus on the goal when cold calling.
    2) Research your markets and prospects.
    3) Prepare an opening statement for your cold call.
    4) What should be in the opening statement of your cold call?
    5) Prepare a cold calling script for the rest of your cold call.
    6) Ask for an appointment at a specific time when cold calling.
    7) Remember that gatekeepers are your allies not your foes.
    8) Smooth the way for your cold call by sending prospects a small, unique promotional item.
    9) Do your cold calling early in the morning, if possible.
    10) Be persistent when cold calling.

I hope this may help you a bit.
all the best for rest of the call.
