Getting Clients - Methods that Work!

[Just added a new Method on page 3..check it out]

I have not made many posts to the forum however I do monitor for ideas or trends in the marketing approach to merchants. I am a glorified marketer to multi-million dollar businesses in the payments industry. We all begin the journey finding ways to get merchants to buy our services.

There are a few tips I can share here for those of you working to get clients

1. If you are just breaking into the offline business the best place to start is with new businesses. You can go to your local county seat and purchase a monthly Trade Name registry list. Sometimes they sell them online but some may be behind in updated technology. It's worth the effort to go and pick it up monthly. Why? Because new businesses know that competition is fierce and are willing to spend money to launch their business.

2. Once you land a few clients, find out who their venders are - You can contact these venders and tell them them you share a mutual client and would like to have a referral relationship. Referrals are very important to growing your offline business.

3. Be very consistent!! - Consistency will make you a success in your marketing what ever medium you are using. If you are emailing then set a daily goal and do it first thing daily. When I was training offline agents I could tell who was successful and who was not by how consistent their marking plan was.

4. Journal what you are doing. Don't leave everything to memory. It's not wise. You will be surprised at how easy it is to find what is working and what is a time consumer.

5. Finally - Use your brain and be creative. don't be afraid to try different strategies. I have come up with my best eureka moments by trying a new strategy and bumping into something that can be life changing on the way.

Well I hope these tips were helpful. Finding new clients can be a daunting task but remember the payoff for having a reoccurring monthly income stream. People pay top dollar and many multiples of monthly earnings for businesses like this. Keep at it and you will have a valuable asset in the end.

If I can assist you feel free to Pm..

    Sparro...

    That's some great advice.

I've been around the marketing arena for quite a while and you taught me something new that I'd never thought about before.

If you're just starting out, then your best client would be new businesses.

Who better to be in need of your products or services then someone who's trying to grow their new business.

A more established business might not have the need to act now as would a new business because they have customers already that can help get them by until they can figure out how to grow even more.

The new business needs every advantage it can get at the start.

    Good info.

      Thanks Dealmaker, Glad to hear.

The county seat lists sole proprietors and they are fairly fresh leads. They show up there usually before any other list you can purchase.

LinkedIn is great because there is a level of trust people have that differs from other social networks. Join groups and start inviting people to become connections. I should write a WSO for Linkedin. A REAL Method that works in the real world!!

                Here's a tip:

After you join some niche groups, find some members with a lot of connections and message them a question like "Do you know if anyone has a good merchant account provider to refer?" a question that is totally unrelated to your business. When they respond thank them then invite them to be a connection. Works every time!

                      Hi Trini,

I was speaking about US. Businesses here in the US. They have to register their business name in the district (county in US). The district sells the list usually on a per name basis. You have to do a search per state like "FL trade name registry" and with some research you can find out how to purchase. Hopefully there is a similar process where you live.

I recently gave a free report out in a niche group on linkedin. Had them request a copy and had 68 requests. However I've not converted any of them in paying clients yet so I think more testing is required.

While I agree that new businesses are apt to be more receptive to getting their business online, I wouldn't discount the established businesses for the simple reason -- many of them have not kept their websites up-to-date and therefore need help too.

Just a little bit of digging into the background of local businesses in your area (who has a website that gets updated and who doesn't) could very well mean the ability to land a new client.

      - How many of them have a fan page?
      - How many use postcards marketing to bring traffic to their website?
      - How many offer webinars that resemble their offline seminars?
      - How out of date is their web design? Could it be improved?
      - How can social networking boost their brand?

      And the list goes on...

Yes, newly erected businesses need guidance to get known online, but established websites need a helping hand too.

New businesses aren't good because A they have no money to pay you and B They have no money to pay you. Look at people already spending a few thousand a month on adwords, these people are already spending money on online marketing and always looking for better returns on their marketing dollar.

New business account for almost 80% of my clients...

Most offline businesses (in my experience) don't go into business with "no money".. By the very nature of them being offline businesses, they NEED money to get a lease, buy office equipment, etc.. You just have to position yourself as a NEED and not a commodity.

This is a perfect example of how it works for one but not preferred by another. Every method can be leveraged by trial and error. In the Payments Industry, One provider may target Midsized merchants and another may target small mom and pop. They both have pluses and minuses......

    So true!

I get a few students and warriors coming to me and saying "I tried this or that strategy and it didnt work?"

I then do a little digging to find out that they only tried it for maybe 1 or 2 days or less!

    Be consistent and committed!

You didnt learn to walk or talk in 1-2 days! How is this any different?

There are so many ways to market for B2B I have seen companies build portfolios of 10,000 merchants plus in less than 3 yrs. These tips are really just common sense and just the "tip" of the iceburg.

As far as a course is concerned, I would have to see many requests from you guys. If you guys are interested then get your friends to this post and let me know.

I come from the Payments Industry and consult large companies to sell their assets for them. I owned one of these companies for ten years and built a portfolio of merchants from 0 to 7,000 and sold it for many times it's annual earnings. The techniques that I offer MUST work because my reputation depends on it. I can't have a multi-million dollar company do a search in google and find a method that my name is attached to that they know is crap.

I have a killer LinkedIn technique that would be life changing for some of you but again, It has to make sense for me to create it.

Isn't life changing a good enough reason? And congrat's on the sale of your portfolio. If it was in merchant services I know you got a great buyout. Whatever multiple of 7,000 merchants would've been life changing right there!

Linkedin can be an absolute beast for this kind of marketing, but you have to know what you're doing.

Think about it this way. When you hurt your back, why do you go and talk to a chiropractor? Generally because they have a reputation for being knowledgeable at the very subject that matters to you at that moment in time. Did you go to college with them? No. Did you see their certificates? No. They could be any old Joe schmoe and you're letting them crack your spine about.

    Why?

Because they're an authority figure in the niche they're in. We assume that they know what they're talking about. You can do the same, but it takes work. Get yourself on linkedin, connect with people, share knowledge and become an authority figure. Then people will want to work with you, instead of the other way around.

Getting clients is NOT hard. The biggest challenge is believing that it is easy!

    Really.

When you get right down to it, people are people. Business owners are no different.

These business owners are thinking about their families, paying the lease, helping their aching back, etc. If you treat these business owners as a friend and get into conversations with them, you can find out what is bothering them. THEN, when you offer a simple solution and the owners REACT, then you have some ground to stand on.

Yeah, this sounds simplistic, and yeah, there are some details to fill in... but in a nutshell, this is how to walk in and close a business owner.

One thing that boosts your response through the roof is going into a business where you know something about the business and you can just talk shop, i.e. talking golf at a pro shop.

Here's another tip: If you plan on having a broader market then your local town. Make sure you offer a free service upfront like a free video or Facebook Fanpage. Anything that won't take a bunch of time to create. This will open the door for communication. Plus, since you will not be having a face to face meeting, this gives them a chance to see your work. I know you probably heard this before but if you do this correctly you should get a new client everytime!

Update: ebook should be complete by beginning of week. I am deciding on whether to use videos or not to explain the steps. More updates to come...

Another Tip: Find a local competitor of yours that is established and work a referral deal with them. If their expertise is website design and yours is SMS mobile marketing then refer the web design to them. You will gain way more in referrals and have more time to market your main product. Referrals are really important and can be life changing for your business.

The biggest mistake that I see when people send an email to business owners is "Too much information!" They try and sell their services from that very first email.

Your first-contact email's goal should always be to get that prospective client to call you for more info -- NOT to try and sell them something! Business owners are people too, don't 'ya know, and will be resistant to blatant sales attempts just like everybody else.

Develop relationships first. If you can get them to call YOU for more info, you're halfway to having a solid client under your belt.

And, for God's sake, DO use videos in your emails to give yourself some credibility! Otherwise, you're just another spam message!

                      Two cents.

Thanks JR Rich, I get your point, but I have a problem making videos. I like to give talks and do so regularly. Its easy for me because its done live. But I just realised I really have a problem making a video for email purposes. Can you direct me on that?
I have gotten responses to initial emails I send but flop when it comes to following up and sending them the required info in a video.

                          Benny,
Don't let this video 'thing' become a roadblock for you. All you're trying to do here is to 'Wow' your prospective client a bit to give yourself some credibility. The easiest way to do that is to sign-up for a one month membership to Animoto Pro ($40) and whip-out a few simple videos that describe what it is that your business entails.

Write a simple script that lists bullet points - maybe 10-15 - that are short and to-the-point. Get some stock photos (high res are best) from istockphoto or fotolia that fit the bullet points. Pick some music from Animoto's huge music library and you're good to go!

Keep the video to 90 seconds or less - you'll lose their attention if you make them longer.

The point is to get them to call you to learn more...not to sell them! An important point.

Also, when you get them on the phone, don't offer everything in the universe to them. Keep your offerings simple at first and then build on them later. Personally, I like to get an email list going for them. It's easy to do and the client can see immediate results.

                          Best,

how do i avoid getting my mails caught in their spam box with a link attached? I don't use graphics as a rule.

                              Thanks!

                              Benny,

Avoiding getting your emails dropped into some spam filter is a never-ending quest for Internet Marketers. The presence of a link doesn't really affect this issue one way or another - Amazon sends them all the time remember!

You DO have to avoid having the email read like a spam message...

But how do you contact them? What should is say if i was to send them an email? I do custom mobile websites designs everyday and this kind of partnership would really increase my profits.
I don't live in US and that could be a problem but i have US Toll Free phone number and all the possible way to communicate with my partners and this kind of partnerships are taking place everyday right?
How can i get such partnerships? How can i build some trust with them?

I'm waiting for your linked in methods too
I am assuming your main market is in the US from your response above and this pertains to getting referral partners. First, decide what service other than your main service offering is requested most by your clients. If it's website design, for example, send an email that is really personal asking if they are currently referring to a partner. Be sure to mention in the email that you get lots of requests and currently your outsourcing it to freelancer or elance. Also ask what they feel would be a fair referral fee etc.

Hi Sparrow great post. 1 question... What do you mean when you say refer the web design to them? should it not be the other way and refer the SMS mobile marketing to them i'm really interested in this i don't want to do it online.

So lets say for example i sell cookies and i refer some customers to my loacl bakery or whatever would i then have to go over to them and ask to refer my business to his customers is this how that works? i'm confused sorry.

But again great post looking forward to your book.

You want to find a competitor that sells something internet related but focuses on something that you are currently outsourcing. So if your main push is Mobile Websites and their focus is Google Places listings then call them ask if they would be interested in receiving Google Places requests from your clients. You ask them to refer you their Mobile Website requests.

I hope that clears it up a bit.

That's a great idea. People very easily get caught up in the cycle of trying to beat their competition and end up overlooking the possibility of collaborating with them. A successful business does not necessarily have to be an aggressive one, but it takes some foresight and planning to be able to identify these opportunities when they come along. Thanks for the great tips

TIP: Drive around an area and look for "Grand Opening" or "Coming Soon" signs. Stop in and see if the owner is in. They usually are. It makes a great impression when you stop in cold but it also takes some courage.

While you are at the strip mall go to the other stores surrounding the Grand Opening and tell them you where just at an appointment next door so you decided to stop.

I know this may sound rudimentary to some of you but these are methods that offline marketers and agents have used to make a great living and get things rolling.

You can say that again about the "Shiny Object Syndrome" I have had my fair share such that am so wary now!
And Outsourcing, yeap, that is the target!

About your video, it raised some questions for me (I know you are still working on it ) that I feel may also be raised by your prospective clients (depending on your target audience.) The Intro is captivating......

        The questions:

How is this different from what I currently have.....so?
How will this affect my monthly expenditure?

          Benny,

Yes, the video brings up questions in the clients' mind - precisely what we want! Those questions impel them to call you for clarification, wouldn't you say? Isn't that exactly what we want them to do?

A prospective client who calls you up looking for clarification is an interested client! They wouldn't be calling if they didn't care about what you have to offer.

They're biting on your bait. This is a good thing!

            Jr Rich,

Thank you for contributing here. I think your method is the best method to get any kind of response for emailing cold clients.

Tip: Record a video message like Jr Rich suggests and at the end offer a free service to the first business that responds. CC all the other businesses in that area on your list. This increases urgency along with the power of the video message.

            Good Input JR!

My best tip for getting clients is to find or start a networking group, You become the expert and if your products are top notch, you'll get lots of referrals. Considering the cost of a website and local search optimization (my primary services), the time is well spent! I attend a weekly meeting at a local restaurant and the only cost is lunch. I have closed several deals and have several more in the works.

I'm looking forward to the LinkedIn report as that's an area I haven't fully tapped into yet.

      Duncan,

I read recently of a woman who was simply walking into local businesses at random and offering to take high-res photos of their business & employees.

I understand she was pulling-in consistent $100 days doing this.

      YMMV

In addition to JR Rich's suggestion, you can make them understand the importance of having a photo of their business in their web pages and google listing. (especially google listing as it gives their business more exposure)

You can start by finding out through conversation if they have a website, then offer to give them photos for a small discount.

If they do not have a website and you do not have skills on websites and google listings, pm me and we can take this further.

I just realised your posts is low so you cant PM yet, add me on skype and we can talk.

        Regards,

Duncan, re: Photography...do you have a local Chamber of Commerce? Offer to take pics at events...give everyone you take a picture of your business card...and get one of theirs...you can put the pics up online and they can then pay to purchase them...this ALONE will make you great money but if you handle those folks appropriately (even those who DON'T buy) you can create an endless stream of prospects and clients from this one idea alone. Good luck!

[UPDATE] Tip - Another way to use LinkedIn is to search jobs posting that are looking for inhouse people to do what you offer. Ask them if they are interested in doing work on a consulting basis. Show them how there is a cost savings compared to hiring an employee and paying salary, taxes, insurance and benefits etc....

                HI Sparro

Great tips and I like the way you are looking at creative ways to contact businesses.

I have to confess that I have zero success with Linkedin and know of other businesses who are not impressed with the results so it is interesting to see what other people think of it.

Unless I missed it in the thread I would suggest that anybody trying to reach an offline audience not dismiss direct mail.

Almost all of my business is done sending letters out and it is very effective if done right.

Like you said, it is important to be creative and take action.

                Well done

                Gary

LinkedIn is just a resource, And a huge one. You have to know how to use it, You have to use their information and Concept to your benefit. People who say they are not having success are not using it properly. There is a trick to it.

Direct Mail will also work as you stated if you know how to use copy that gets them to pick up the phone or go to your website.

Once you master a marketing technique in any form You have an advantage over your competitors.

I tell you that you can get a consistent 40% response rate from LinkedIN no joke so to me that makes it the KING!

New Tip: If you have an email list for clients write "LinkedIn - " (remove quotes) then your message on the subject line and test to see if you get a better response rate.

Tip:This is not new but a reminder that forums ARE a great place to find clients. You have to dig a bit deeper for business owner forums but they are there if you do a bit of research. Type in the search

      plumbers "forums"

And you will find forums like this one but with plumbers. Start a thread like I did here and place your sig link. This will get you responses..

    Good advice..

A lot of people overlook the importance of consistency.

I heard somewhere that it takes an average of 7 contacts for someone to buy something from you. So, I keep that in mind when designing a sales funnel.

It's just like the online world (only more effective). You know, all those list owners bombarding their lists with emails..... it's because it works.

I generally farm a list of leads (whether that's google, facebook, local chamber, corporation commission, etc. etc. etc. I get a list).

Then I weed out all the people that my service doesn't fit with. I target the clients that I WANT.

Then I find a way to add some value to their business for free.. I don't have a universal freebie or anything. I've even tried just calling up a business and saying to them point blank "I'd like to work with your company, I think what I have to offer would be a great fit for you. What is your most pressing need right now, and how can I help solve it?"

That particular client turned into a very long lasting client for me, and the help that I provided wasn't even related to the service i was selling. He was just happy that I gave him something that he really needed. It took me all of 2 hours to do and I've reaped the rewards for a very long time now.

Anyway, back on track, I find something that I can offer them that they value.

Once I do that, I put them into a follow-up funnel (this is where consistency comes in). I mail them, I drop stuff off, I call them just to check on how they're doing, I send them emails, I do everything I can to contact them at least 7 times (many times, more).

Then, I ask if we can do business...

It's not easy work, but it sure does make life a whole lot easier.

Keep in mind that the important part of this equation, the thing that will keep you from spinning your wheels and wasting your time, is to WEED OUT THE PEOPLE THAT YOU DON'T WANT TO WORK WITH and only focus on the ones you do!

I've been working on building a leads list today but it is taking a long time (a combination of a chamber of commerce site and searching on Google). Putting together just 100 leads (my goal for this weekend) has taken a few hours. Is there a better / faster to track down leads?

Well, i generally buy a list from my local corporation commission rather than trying to input all their stuff from online.

The chamber of commerce should have a similar list, many times for free..

That will get you well over 100 just in those two.

*hint* you're going to have to probably call them, they don't make it easy to find online.

It is much easier to build your list ON Linkedin. Tip for LinkedIN: Join Groups then send each group member a General question like:

"Does this group have good posts or is it spammy"

Something like that. You could also ask a question relating to where the member is located....is it nice there? etc...

When they reply immediately invite them to be a contact.

        Works every time!

You would be better off calling them and saving the money if you have their phone number. If not then sending them a postcard would suffice. Back in the day I used to drive to the address unannounced!

I purchased LinkedInConfidential (I also have LinkedInFish) and have watched all the videos and read all the pdfs--took a while! OUTSTANDING VALUE!! If you want to create a solid networking system with LinkedIn, you need this product from Tara. Lots of detail, lots of out-of-the-box thinking, lots of creativity to make this work! This is totally white-hat, professional level stuff, but easy enough for a newbie to do. This is the crown jewel of marketing online, period!

It's been quite awhile since I have been here to this thread to post some new tips as I have been extremely busy with my JV brokering services. So I thought I would treat you to a new tip for getting your foot in the door with many niche clients in your area.

I started doing this awhile back for fun and some extra cash and it works like a dream.

I go to expired domain sites like justdropped.com and enter a town or preferably city and find a local keyword domain like:

        Baltimoredentist.com
        or
        Lawncareindenver.com

I check in google keyword tool (I find the easiest and free) to see that the local search traffic is greater than >50. If it is I snap it up.

Now here is where the fun starts. I place it up for auction and send emails to all the "Dentists" for example. I tell them I have contacted every dentist in a 10 mile radius and informed them of the auction.

I set a minimum bid at $25 and watch them fight over it.

Then I contact the runners up and apologize to them that they did not win but offer to look for more domains for them if it will send them traffic and ask them to send me the criteria for what they are looking for.

If they respond, CALL THEM and begin a relationship. They are more receptive to taking your call and your proverbial foot is in the door.

You will receive 1 - 5 replies and I have sold the domains for over $200. Either way you end up with a profit and several leads...

Again, it's all about being creative and getting over the " I don't know you" hump. Now you have something to talk about...

BTW: Don't make a wso out of this method or someone will call it out anyway!

Where do you place it for auction?

Also are you contacting dentists from linkedin or from their websites?

      Tara:

Here's an idea . You can do a search in Places for the domain target market (dentist Baltimore) Click on the map that comes up. Then click on the small orange dots - the ones without the letters. A lot of these in certain niches will indicate that the business at that address has no website. If you contact them re the auction, you can contact the losing auction bidders and you would know that they need a website

Now what would be the best way to contact them as you cannot get an email address from that data? Maybe you could snail mail them?

You can do a private auction asking them to send their highest bid or use one of the auction sites for domains and send them to the link

You do a search in Google for the niche. I also look in linkedin and Manta and message them

This is a persuasion tactic that can work for many service offerings. The concept plays on a desire to win or have what thy neighbor can't have.

They tend to get swept away in the process and they don't want a competitor to get it.
