Offline business - website

I hope this is the right forum for this.

We own a offline photography company. I have no experience with websites. Right now we had a developer make us a flash website that needs to go(seo was not done right and I dont know how to edit the website) and then create a html website that I am able to edit myself.

Couple of questions:

-Does anyone recommend a html template for a website, that I can create on my own? I am wondering if a free wordpress website may be benificial but I worry that because our website is our resume/portfolio that wordpress may not be a good choice?

-Is a html site good for a photographer since there will be alot of photo's on our website? I am asking because I have heard a few photographers saying that flash is the only way to go for a photography business....why, I am not sure.


-I was also thinking about including a opt-in box to build a email list with? maybe saying something like "For current discounts register here".

    A quick google got that link - there are plenty more like it.

    Your offer will need to be a little more compelling than "current discounts". How about a free report - "The 7 Questions You MUST Ask When Choosing A Photographer" - or something similar. Give them value and they'll give you their address.

    SEO the crap out of your website, I know a few photographers making a killing with good website. Think "wedding photographer" etc. Probably because all their competition is still in Flash. Flash was popular among web designers and artsy people that have no idea about SEO. Now that iPhones and iPads don't support it even it's biggest fans are coming to realize it's not a good idea.

    Go easy on the opt in's it is not always necessary. People searching for a photographer generally want to hire someone, they want to know prices and how good they are (use testimonials etc). They don't really need to read to download an ebook, they are ready to talk to someone right now and hire you because they have an event coming up or want family photos etc (people are time poor they want their problem solved as fast as possible not to read ebook's about it).

    Yes Wordpress is a great choice and as Colm already mentioned there are a ton of good photography portfolio type themes.

      TBH, I never thought of it that way, Dan. You may be right! I don't think having the opt-in can do any harm though, just so long as you give your phone number / contact form the same visibility.

      Really it boils down to - what action do you want the person who just landed on your site to take? Do you want them to call? Sign up? Email? In what order? Then structure your landing page accordingly and give them a compelling reason to take that action!
