I love Warrior Forum and I owe a lot of success to this forum. I by no means am anywhere near where I want to be, but I will be there eventually. So I want to share a tip to you all. A scary tip to some.

It doesn't matter, if you're doing web design, mobile websites, SEO, google places, it works for all of that! The biggest struggle is getting clients, wouldn't you agree?

Sure, optimizing for certain keywords, nationally or locally will get you visits, calls, even some sales here and there. Pretty cool to do if you're okay with being passive, and waiting for people to come to you.

Some of you are more comfortable sending out emails. That works at times, I have done it, and got sales from strictly emails. The major problem I have had sending emails is the few bad eggs that want to report my email address to spamhaus and a few others out there that make any email on my domain, useless! That really sucks, and it has happened a few times.

The real solution to driving up sales for your services.... SURPRISE!!... COLD CALLING! It is so intimidating to pick up the phone, calling a random business and pitching your service. I know it is, I have felt the same anxiety about it before so I understand how you feel. I understand making excuses, or avoiding it, and going back to email. After all, if after a certain amount of calls you are bound to get a sale, I might just need to send more emails to get a sale, right?

Well, the logic makes sense doesn't it? The truth is, according to my testing and my personal experience is that the people you email and if you actually close a sale, the value and the dollar amount isn't as high as it could be if you were calling. Now, I'm sure more seasoned people can explain why that is, but I don't know why. I just noticed that pattern in my personal experience.

One fellow warrior is younger and not wanting to cold call because of the age. At first, I actually bought it, and that is a good excuse. He is right, if he calls people and they can tell his age they will be hesitant about it because HE is hesitant. How many of us can come up with excuses that prevent us from calling? Being too young, being too old, not having a business license, not having a website, not having a business location, driving a crappy car, living in your moms basement... all are legit excuses.

I promise you, we can all come up with excuses that are great reasons why we can't do it or succeed.

There are people that do 500 calls a day... and killing it! While many of you struggle, just making that first call. I wonder, how many of you have waited months and months, still not making your first call. I'm not an amazing telemarketer... I spent some time over at John Durham's forum and can't believe how great some of these guys are. I can't imagine my production being 5 times what it is right now. I'm doing well, as it is, but if I can make some improvements, just to double my output, it was be amazing.

Look, you are going to get people to say no. You are going to get people who think you are the scum of the earth for bothering them and interrupting their precious time. I look at it, as they are ungrateful for me reaching out to them offering business booming services that one of their competitors would love to have.

If you make the calls, you will have no's, but you will get a yes somewhere in there! 10 calls a day may not cut it... sometimes 100 calls a day doesn't cut it. The younger warrior I was talking about, maybe businesses would discriminate a bit because of the age but it IS a numbers game and I guarantee if he made enough calls he would get people to use his service.

The more you pick up the phone and call, the more sales you will make.

Some of you are using your own scripts for appointment setting... I think that is a great strategy. You aren't selling over the phone, you're gaining trust first... however, you don't need to do it that way. You could sell directly over the phone.

For some of you who are beginning, and you're having anxiety over calling these businesses... use a different approach that makes you feel comfortable. Once you make a certain amount of calls, you can evaluate what you're doing and maybe make improvements.

My first goal, when calling a business, is to get their email address. My pitch, isn't to sell them immediately over the phone, but to email them a report of their website...ranking... and what they are missing. It is FREE and no obligation to use any service you are just doing this to create awareness and help them out because you are such a nice, helpful person. One, you have their email address... two, you're establishing yourself as an expert in your field. Once you send a free report, follow up in the next day or two, and inform them of a special you have at the moment. IT WORKS. At least for me. If they aren't interested, you have their email and can send out newsletters. I have found that even potential clients that are NOT interested at that moment, end up coming back to me in a couple months.

Pick up the phone guys... make the calls and you will have results. I have clients locally, and in almost every single state of the country. If you don't make the calls, someone else out there will. Don't blame your lack of results on anything other than yourself. Make the calls, don't make excuses!

Happy hunting!

Great post, it's funny/ironic because the "pattern" you explained of if I just send a few more emails is exactly what I went through before finally deciding to make my FIRST call a few days ago, after months of trying everything besides cold calling. It was literally only one call that I made, but the business owner kindly declined and even thanked me for calling, which I wasn't expecting, and I'm glad I broke the wall of finally calling.

If you don't mind disclosing, which ranking software or site are you utilizing? I have Rank Tracker from the PowerSuite and that's what I'm currently using for one of my client's that's needy with wanting reports.

Also, do you have tips for appointment setting & "meetings" with clients that aren't local with cold calling? Do you do screen sharing or do you solely have the "meetings" over the phone?

Again, excellent post...really everyone it just takes that FIRST call, that much I can vouch for...after that you should be able to breathe a sigh of relief and tell yourself hey, that wasn't so bad after all..next call **starts dialing**

Hey, congrats on making your first call. Do it some more!

I use a few different things, I like to track rank using rank tracker but I don't use that for reports. RankingToday.com - Online SEO and Networking tools is a decent one that you can grab the basic report, put it in a PDF and then add a little bit to it and send it off. Quite a few different report options you have there too. It isn't perfect, but its better than doing a 100% custom report for someone you don't know if they will buy or not!

For recurring clients I don't recommend using that, you should just customize a report that mixes webmaster tools, analytics and actual rank.

Another GREAT tool is SEM Rush

For out of area businesses, I don't set appointments. I personally, try to avoid appointment setting to sell. For out of area businesses, I just do the same thing, send a report, follow up, add them to my email list and try to close the deal. If they don't bite, I at least have their email and they will receive specials, free tips, and other offers.

Good job, keep up the good work.

What advice could you give to get passed the secretary and to the decision maker of the business you called?

First, you need to understand why a secretary or receptionist is important for their business. You aren't the only person that calls wanting to make some money.

Secondly, these people aren't just random kids taken off the street, they are trained. They handle calls from solicitors every day. There are two kinds of screens, blind screens where if they don't recognize your name, then you're SOL. The other, an investigative screen, where they ask questions before telling you the decision maker is not available.

Thirdly, you need to do something different. You need to approach them in a way they are not trained. How to do that, is based on your own perception and ability to be quick on your feet. What works for me, btw I am not a sales god, but if I come across pressed for time and force them to make a quick, uncollected decision immediately that is what works best.

It really depends on you. Overall, to even worry about that you need to make some calls, which is the point of the post!

Wow! Phone 500 businesses saying; "Hi! I can create a website for you!" (or...whatever)

Whooppee Fizz! If you're lucky....you might get 2 "interested".

Always amazes me....the naivete of people trying to sell stuff!

Here's a Phrase to remember...when trying to sell anything:

"GIVE THEM A REASON TO LISTEN TO YOU!"

          Same as the MAIN purpose of a Headline;

"GIVE THEM A REASON TO READ FURTHER!"

Reminds me of my younger days down on "Maxwell Street" in Chgo. Me and my buddies would go down there (4 city blocks full of Vendor Booths on each side of the street...selling everything from Fruits to Nuts and beyond) Shady-looking characters would come up to us....flip open their trench coat...exposing arms full of watches....and say: "Ya wanna Good watch ata Good Price!"

Well....down there in THAT area....I'm sure they sold their share of watches...because they were IN an area...loaded with "Prospects" (not suspects)...who had ALREADY proven they were "Prospects" by their very appearance on the Street.

However....just because someone has a business phone number and a business address does NOT mean they are "Prospects" for whatever you are trying to sell. They are "SUSPECTS"!

          So....with whatever product or service you want to sell....your 1st job is to;

"SEPARATE THE PROSPECTS FROM THE SUSPECTS!"

          Don Alm...."prospect separator"

This is a great post. Thanks for sharing. I want to build my offline business, I know cold calling is the way to go. Yesterday I called and today I called. No appointments yet , more or less I'm getting more comfortable on the phone and selling less robotlike! I'm trying to make it more casual approach. Between yesturday and today I called 127 folks and spoke to 58 decision makers. 18 already have a webguy and 40 were "not interested" my goal is to focus on these not interested and turn them into someone who can't do without my service.

I do like your suggestion, to get their email, then send them the report on their site / market. Then follow up. That's what I was trying to book appointments to do that, to show them a competitive and market analysis. But if I can just send the report via email, then this may be a little more efficient and they may be more inclined to bite the bate. I like it, tomorrow I think I will try this out.

    Thanks again.
