Building sites for clients - Approaching it

Building sites for clients seems like something I'd enjoy. Having "fiddled" around in this department the last year or so I'd like to offer this as a service as well.

That being said, I'm left with a few questions on how those of you who do this approach the work involved. Here are a few questions for those that build their sites using WordPress (which I love) and your process.

To make it simple we'll pretend a local plumber wants to hire me for a site.

Images:

Do you purchase stock photos from istockphoto.com for example? Do you take pictures as well as buy photos? Do you pass off the higher cost of royalty-free stock images within the site project? For maybe 3-6 pictures you could spend $20-$100. Sound about right?

So how do you work with and deal with images (and how much are you willing to spend)?

Themes:

Do you purchase a handful of themes with dev licenses from sites like themeforest.com? Do you make your own from themes such as Headway?

Maybe stick with 3-5 or so different paid themes? Rotating them for different niches (flower shops, plumbers, HVAC etc.) and just getting to know your favorites?

Pages:

What are your "need to have" pages? Home, About, Services, Contact, Location/Hours....?

Do you offer 5-page and up sites? Testimonial pages, gallery/tours, menus and so on make for more upsells, but how do you approach which "5" to include? Do you find that it matters to the business owner?

Hosting:

A popular question. I can't tell what I'd lean towards at this point. The arguments should be familiar to most of us, but is there a greater consensus?

A) You host. You get maintenance fees, but potential headaches.
B) They host. No host maintenance (but still "change and update" fees can be negotiated of course) but possibly the affiliate pay. Far less headaches however.

Preferences here?

Lead Capture:

Same question for hosting. Do you add them onto your aweber account (or constant contact, getresponse etc) or get them their own. My thoughts steer me towards getting them their own accounts for both of the above for reasons of being more hands-off and less management. But I could be missing out on some other profits or relationships that I'm maybe not seeing?

Hopefully I've made myself clear. I'd like to do this although it's the selling of said service that can make more money rather than the doing. But at the same time, for now, I enjoy creating sites in WordPress and would like to do so.

Hearing your experience (for those that do this for a living, part or full) would be beneficial for not just myself, but for those in the background wondering the same things from time to time.

Thanks guys (and gals). I'm sure more questions will come up. I'll hammer away again when they do.

    Hey Nathan,

We offer full-service design and web development through my company. Here's the process and a few answers to your questions...

    Images
My designer grabs images from istockphoto.com to use in our designs. He just uses the watermarked images until we have come to an agreement with client on what they like and don't like. Once the mock-up as been approved, we'll be the image license and replace the watermarked.

Having said that, we only will typically use 1-5 images in a design, so the cost isn't much, considering we charge $2-5k for design.

    Themes
For custom sites, we build from scratch and then will use PSD to HTML $45- PSD to XHTML/CSS-PSD to Wordpress $99 to cut-up our design into a Wordpress theme.

If we're going into a market (plumbers, for instance), we'll build 2-3 base themes (same process above) and just make minor tweaks to the website (colors, etc...) depending on the client.

    Pages
Standard pages are: Home, About, Services & Contact.

Now, this is a loaded question, as typically that's not all the pages we include, because we're make a custom website that fits their needs, not what our website offers for them.

A lot of those additional "pages" we'll put in the sidebar like Testimonials, Hours/Locations, etc... But really, it just depends on the business, unless you're building just a standard template to fit one niche/vertical.

    Hosting
Businesses do different things for each. For me, I personally like to have them buy their domain at Godaddy and buy their hosting there as well, so it's "all on them" and if they don't pay "it's not on us".

I've seen TOO MANY TIMES web design companies hold websites hostage or clients want to leave the tight grip of the design firm and they say no or charge some ridiculous fee, so they have to start all over. I didn't want to be that way with clients, and I always tell them the above - I use it as a way to build trust and rapport.

    Lead Capture
We use our own personal Aweber account, mainly because it's just easier to setup (since we have it already) and they don't have to incur another cost.

As for forms, we use a company called FormExperts.com which makes it extremely for my team to make changes on the fly. We use these as "hooks" into our company. I don't want them to completely fly on their own (like with hosting), so we like to use these hooks to keep them around and tied with our company.

    Hope that helps!

I would suggest fotolia instead of istock. Same good quality and selection but a LOT cheaper!

Hey Adam that's a huge help. I really appreciate it as that's exactly what I was looking for. I might trouble you with some more questions down the road if that's all right?

    Thanks again...
