Hate Cold Calling or Cold Walk-ins? I'm hoping this works for me....

I hate cold calling and even cold walk-ins. In fact, I was speaking to a chiropractor friend of mine and she says she hates when people cold call her and walk in randomly as well. So my goal is to end that madness in 2012.

What I do like, however, is networking and building relationships with others.

And here's a story about that which just happened.

I was at a networking meeting a couple of weeks ago and I met an advertising sales rep for a local magazine. It's one of those free magazines you can pick up at a supermarket or read in a doctor's office. It has local stories and includes advertisements from local businesses.

After talking for a few minutes, I set up an appointment with her to talk about working together. My goal was to have her sell QR Codes to her current advertisers, and pay me to create the codes and whatever webpages they go to.

Well I had that meeting today and here's how it went. (As a side note, my business creates mobile websites, regular websites, SEO, online videos, etc.)

During our meeting I told her that most of the advertisers in her magazine don't use QR codes, and the ones that do simply go to their non-mobile websites. I then did a dog and pony show by showing her some mobile sites, some mobile squeeze pages, and talked about all the possibilities her advertisers would have by simply adding a QR code to their current ads.

She loved it, but said that it will be difficult to get any more money from her advertisers to pay me to create the codes and build whatever page or site the code goes to. She even admited that a lot of them are lowering their print advertising budget and spending it more on social media, websites, etc.

I thought that was going to be the end of our meeting....and then started thinking about how I'd have to go back and make more cold calls again.

But then it hit me.

Sitting in front of me was someone who already has the business contacts that I wanted.

So I asked her..."What if I created QR codes for her advertisers that go to their own custom one page site (squeeze page or coupon or something) for FREE? The only thing I would want is to be able to market my other services to the business owners once I'm in there. The magazine could offer a new free sevice (QR Codes) to their advertisers and I'd get my foot in the door and build my own relationships with these advertisers."

She really liked that idea and is going to discuss it with the actual magazine owner. She also said I may be able to get my own ad in the magazine for free as well.

I'll be following up with her in a few days and will most likely meet with the magazine owner as well. And if this works out, it will put me in front of a lot of local business owners without having to make any cold calls.

So if you're tired of cold calling, cold walk-ins, or sending out hundreds of emails, then try to belly up with someone who already works with the business owners (like a local magazine publisher) and try to do some sort of joint venture with them instead.

I think you invented a new lead generation system...

Lets make up a name for it...

    How bout...

    NETWORKING!

Ok, I'm being a tad sarcastic here, but that story really is a perfect example of using Networking to build ones business. Nicely done!

Good luck with this. Maybe you will be fortunate to work with some open minded people but I can tell you that I have been very unsuccessful with these types of arrangements.

The main reason being that they fear competition, even if its perceived. Especially those in the print medium because their clients are already cutting back. Lord forbid those clients find out how powerful social media and internet marketing can be if handled by a pro, they may REALLY cut down.

We have entered these types of arrangements with great success. Structuring it so it compliments their medium and adds value to their offering goes a long way.

Where there is a will there is a way. Well done my friend. Even if you owner of the mag does not initally agree, see if you can set an appointment with him/her and get their ideas of why it wont work or what they think can be done to make it work. Even more so move to the next person who advertises. Turn your cold call into a warm call and provide them with a commision on every close.

Excellent! The power of networking and imagination! You took action and that is what we all need to do, disregard the negative feedback. Networking groups are becoming more common in my area. There's a reason for this= it works! Yeah, keep us updated on your results Mike.

I agree that it's networking, but this idea has a twist. Along with trying to network with indvidual business owners, I'm networking with a magazine sales rep who already has business owners as customers. The goal is to have her get me in front of all the business owners she works with.

Well, this particular sales rep KNOWS that the magazine has to make a leap into the online world. They do have their own website now but, as she puts it, it's very old and tired looking. So she's open minded. Plus she sees this as another added service that she can either sell or give away to her clients....which is something her competition isn't doing right now.

Also during our meeting, she said she wants me to come to their local chamber meeting next week to meet more people there. She's pretty big with the chamber and having her walk me around and introduce me to other business owners is GOLDEN!!!

      I'm sorry.....I'm in business to ...
      1) HELP small business people (Chiropractors included) get MORE business
      2) Help ME....pay my bills and support my family

I do NOT have "time" to "make friends" or "go to meetings"! With My programs I usually ask for less than $500 so....I "BARGE IN"...ask for the owner....show a Sample of what I'm doing, explaining where it's going and how it can help his business...then...show my prices and either write up an Order or Thank Him for His Time and...."Barge Into the Door Next Door!"

Granted....some biz owners (and Chiros) HATE IT....when people like me "Barge In" trying to sell them something but, "Hey!" this is STILL a "Capitalistic" and FREE Country!

I run into maybe 1 out of 100 who "give me some static" about "Barging IN" but...for the most part....the things I sell I TRULY BELIEVE can HELP small business owners (and Chiros)....and prospects can sense my "PASSION" and SINCERETY"!

PLUS.....with ALL the programs I sell I appeal to their Competitiveness (Hey! If they don't have a "Competitve Nature" ...they should go WORK FOR SOMEBODY as an "EMPLOYEE"!) When they understand they can have an EXCLUSIVE with MY programs....THEY BUY!....to get in B4 their competitor does!

My wife operated a RETAIL Antique Shoppe for many years. In fact, her business is what spurred me onto coming up with programs that would help HER biz (She got in for Freebies otherwise I'd have to sleep in the shed behind out home) And....she was Bombarded everyday by "Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, FundRaisers of all kinds AND..."Street Walkers" (homeless folks looking for HandOuts)....so...when someone came in with a program that could HELP her get more customers...she welcomed them. Then got the info and showed it to me...whereupon I got many of my Ideas.

So...as long as there are "Doors" to Shops and Offices....there'll be people like "Me"....looking to Barge In!

Don Alm...."Barger" from waay baack and STILL "Barging"...because I BELIEVE that what I sell....can HELP people...and....put food on my Table!

OK, I have a question. What do you tell the client when he learns he can do the QR code all by himself and not have to pay anyone to create it?

And, as for my area, most businesses who know about QR codes are doing them in house or the local free paper or other print media are doing it for them at no charge. It is built into their advertisement.

Trying to "SELL" a QR Code is a bad idea in my opinion.

I'm not selling the creation of a QR code. I'm selling what the QR code will do once it's created. If they want it to bring up a mobile sqeeze page, that's what I'll build. If they want it to go to a mobile website, then I'll build that site. Or if they want it to add people to a text message marketing system, I'll do that too since I provide SMS services as well.

So don't look at it as creating and selling a little digital square. Sell it as how you'll make that square bring them more business.

On Thursday I'll be doing a presentation at one of our local networking meetings and my goal is to get the members excited about all the possibilities a QR code can provide. Then offer my services to provide those possibilities.

I hate doing walk ins and cold calling myself, so for 2012 I decided to devise simple tools for others to make money doing this sort of thing promoting my services.

For example, I have recently taken on a commissioned "agent" who will be dropping by local businesses, introducing himself, and leaving some good information behind that should grab the attention of the business owner.

On the material left behind, I have the agent's name and phone number, which is actually a virtual number provided by Twilio ($1 per month) that, when called, reaches an openvbx flow I set up. So I have basically "branded" the marketing material for this agent and any leads will be attributed to him.

When the number is called, the caller is greeted by a short message (mp3), I am then sent a text message to my phone instantly informing me that someone at (phone number) has just called my agent. The caller's number is entered into a database, and the call is then forwarded to my agent so he can set an appointment to meet with the biz owner. The phone call between my agent and the biz owner is recorded so I have a record (mp3) of it in my Twilio account.

Any sales from this prospect will include nice commissions for this agent. With this sort of system, you can have people out working for you all day long generating leads.

It does suck to have to walk in and speak with business owners and cold call businesses to get sales. I do, however believe it is one of the best ways to find new customers. Majority, of these offline businesses rely on these type of methods to find their own clients. It's totally different when comparing to a web based business.

I think a combination of cold calling, walk-ins and other creative methods to find customers would be best. You can always outsource your cold calling and walk-ins with a profit sharing method.

Better 50% of something than 100% of nothing.

@xlfutur1 - awesome find, thanks for the heads up. I will definitely, start looking into this once I am ready.

Just curious, is the Business owner giving their consent to be recorded? If not, thats a violation of Federal wiretapping Statutes and could land you in major trouble!

the call doesn't have to be recorded, but if so, a simple message before connecting to the agent can just say "this call may be recorded for customer service and training purposes." Something along those lines.

For even more safety, the message can say, "press 1 to connect to the agent, press 2 to end this call." so if they are paranoid about being recorded, they can end the call right then. If they do, its probably not a good prospect anyway.

    Mike,
I'm almost with Don on this one, maybe a little less aggressive.
I walk in and introduce myself as a fellow independent businessman.
We talk business. I ask questions & listen. Don't try to sell anything.

That is the LAST cold call I EVER make to that business. Period.
After that it's "Hi john, saw something last week that made me
think about what you said about................."

I'm loving this thread. Yes, I get your concept. A QR code can, of course, be created by anyone. But not every business is currently understanding the value of a lead generating site (or page within their site). So, the QR code you create for them is actually doing something unique and valuable. Love this idea!
