Looking Into The Future Is All That Matters! Right? WRONG!!

So I have been thinking a lot the last couple days, new year resolutions, goals, finances, safety nets, blah blah blah. Tired of hearing friends with no direction talking about the same myth most people follow in regards to not looking at the past but looking at the future.
Since it is a new start, a new year and new goals for all of us running our businesses, it is easy to get distracted making all these hopeful wishes and promises and all this other garbage for the new year.
Too many people try escaping from their past, without ever learning anything from it.
Today I was going through my paypal and other records of 2011 and realized how important it is to learn from the past. History repeats itself a lot. You can't direct where you're going unless you know where you've been. I took the information from the past year and applied it in a way to where I can set goals this year.
Based on last years numbers, I have set monthly goals, based on the previous year's sales volume. I know ahead of time, which months may be tricky and involve a bigger push. I know which months may require more advertising, whether it is adwords, facebook or something else.
The insight I have from 2011, is going to help me increase MY business and have BETTER results in 2012. Of course, my data and info isn't going to pick up the phone, or get work done, but it sets a bench mark and allows me to properly forecast the next year.
I encourage everyone to set goals, using information and data from last year. If you didn't have an impressive year, who cares? The information you have gained is impressive and should be used to better yourself this year.
EVALUATE!
Have a month where leads were hot then froze? Try to figure out why it happened, evaluate where you need to change your business.
Successful businesses are not successful because they blindly ride into the sunset with wishful thinking, and goals without action. They are successful because they use the information from the past to prepare for the future.
Evaluate.... Adjust...AND SUCCEED!
P.S. When evaluating and using your data from last year, make sure to set goals. Set monthly goals and ultimately yearly goals, FINANCIALLY! I wouldn't recommend setting a goal where you increase net income by 300%... USUALLY that isn't realistic, but it is doable. The main thing is, you need to set your goals and accomplish them. It will give you a rush and have you exceed your expectations. My monthly forecasts have me increasing my yearly business by slightly above 20%. That is what I HAVE to do, even though I want to increase by 200%, we will readjust once the goal is met.
P.S.S - So far, just being Jan 3rd, I have matched last years monthly sales. Don't let anyone tell you that January is a bad month. I believed that last year and it hindered my sales. This month is so juicy, businesses have new budgets... go get their money!
