Hey Guys

If you don't actually meet the client, what payment method do you use? I've currently got a client waiting for payment instruction on £1400 in the UK. I don't have PayPal and don't really want to mess about with it, so what other payment methods are convenient?

Thanks
Adam Downing

He can always mail you a check.

I use paypal, via an invoice sent by freshbooks.

I use paypal and although at first I viewed it as a negative I just turn it around and tell prospects that:

We use paypal for security reasons. No member of our staff has access to your credit card information.

Most recognize that as an intelligent way to do business and considerate of their concerns about using their credit card.

I don't have PayPal so those suggestions are useless to me i'm afraid. It's limited and no matter what details I submit they don't want to unlimit. I've tried calls, emails the lot!

Check out squareup.com. If they aren't in the UK maybe someone has the same service there. You can do phone and onsite credit card payments on your phone or tablet.

      Hello Adam

Ask them to do a straight bank transfer. You pay the charge though, it isn't much. 99.9% they will have online banking facility anyway so it is no trouble for them. If not they will hae telephone banking.

It takes time for Merchant Services to be set up. Banks will credit check you these days.

Might be an idea to open a bus account and start to build up a history if you don't have one already. Nat West is 2 years free banking for example.

As above congrats on your problem.

Now I believe if you have a customer sold, they will make the payment no matter what platform. The exception to that, is western union. Great for scams!

        @ David Miller,

Do you have your employees send the online invoice? If so how do you keep track of that?

I am trying to figure a way where I can have my employees send an online invoice without me and yet get it to my paypal account without them accessing my admin paypal and still giving them credit for the sale.

        ***Edited***

I just found this out. I called freshbooks and you can have staff login as subaccounts of your freshbook account and then they can send there own emails and online invoices.

          I use a software program called "Q-Check". (http://www.q-check.com/)

          I install the program ($100 Total with 30 day Trial) and customers can either;
          1) FAX me their BUSINESS CHECK
          or
          2) Read the Numbers on the check....to me...over the phone

I then go to the Q-Check program and enter the info and Print It Out on my INK JET printer. I stamp the back with "For Deposit Only"....just as if I had been HANDED a regular check in person.

And....if my customer has agreed to a Monthly Payment...on the 1st of the month....I go to the Q-Check program and have it Print Out the checks. No sending invoices...No dealing with PayPal....No Credit Card permissions....just Print Out the checks, Stamp them and deposit in bank.

Over the years I've found that MY customers would rather NOT give me a Credit Card or go up to PayPal and enter in their info. They'd RATHER just give me one of their BUSINESS CHECKS where funds come out of their BUSINESS CHECKING ACCOUNT!

No "Farting Around" with extra rigamarole.

          So...check out Q-Check.

Don Alm....who's been using "Checks By Fax" and "Checks By Phone" programs since 1992!

I use invoicera (Billing Software + Invoicing Software + Online Invoice Management System) and authorize.net. Invoicera is cheaper than freshbooks, has cheaper autobills, and has good support.

Plus they didn't charge more for me to use authorize.net with them.

It wont help for this sale.

But, you seriously need to think about getting a real life merchant account.

      You will need 3.

One for Visa and Master card.

      One for American Express

      One for Discover.

American Express and Discover ARE sometimes bundled, but its not standard.

Also. if your going to slack off on one, slack off on Discover.

I also suggest, if you do decide to get a real merchant account,
don't do it with out help from a colleague or friend who actually
has one. Merchant acc sales are rife with scams, and high hidden fees
IF you don't know what your looking for.

A good place to start will be your bank.

I think Paypal is quite a good option. It is reliable and secure. I am not denying that there are certain woes around with Paypal with their fees and charges. But still, they are quite convenient and reliable. I have also heard that moneybookers.com is quite good but I have never used it.

        Adam,

PayPal is easy however it has its pitfalls - commission costs and clients doubt in online transactions.

You have many payment options at your disposal.

BACS or Bank Transfer - Setup a business account or use a personal one. Businesses are use to paying via BACS, it is familiar to them and they will have no issues in doing so.

Cheque - 99% of businesses will write you a cheque the risk is on your side. It all depends on the client, if they are an existing client that you trust then accept a cheque and start work however if they are new then state as they would like to settle the deposit or whatever via cheque there will be a 5 days waiting period before work will commence for security reasons.

Failing that use something like Sage Pay - Keep it familiar, most UK businesses know of Sage, one of the largest industry book keeping software's, they will have no issues entering their card details!
