Hi, I was hoping I could some advice/guidance from the friendly experts on this forum

I'm taking a new approach to local marketing (i know it's not exactly groundbreaking or new but it is an idea I came up with).
The concept is to create a "best restaurants + city" website and allow only 3-5 businesses to have their business listed on there. I feel this will be a lot more powerful than a directory site, which currently pops up first in google, because they are not competing against a large number of businesses.

Now my idea for promoting it was in the form of direct mail sent to each restaurant in the city, saying something like "have your business listed on an authority site, be known as the best restaurant in town, blah blah blah. Only x many businesses will the have opportunity to be a part of this so call now, or miss out."

I'm currently waiting on the site to rank a bit better, so was going to sit down and try to write out the letter.

So what did I want help with I hear you ask?

Well first off have you ever done this and do you think it will work?

Secondly do you think there would be a better way to promote this?

Lastly but certainly not least, do you know of any resources for writing in this form or do you have any pointers for direct mail writing?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

    Hi Chris,

This type of site is a great idea as I have built successful type local based directories for the last 3 years. From my experience, I would offer these couple of simple suggestions for whatever they are worth...
    1. Not limit it to 3-5 per city, but make it a featured listing with only 2 or 3 available for a particular food category - italian, chinese, etc. That way you are building more of an authority local website and can have 2 pricing options... 1 for the regular listing say $25 a month and one for the featured listing, say $99 a month. You can also charge a setup fee depending on what is included in the listing... video, menu, bio, etc.
    2. I think the mail may work, but I hired an outside sales rep through craiglist to make the sale. 100 % commission on the set up fee. Anywhere from $99 to $399 depending on what you are offering in the listing. I make the residual monthly. Win-Win
This will definitely work and I wouldn't wait to get the site ranking better, I would go out and give 5 listings away for free, one in each major food category, and opitimize those listings and use those as proof to help you or your sales rep make a bunch of sales.

    Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Thanks for your insight. I thought someone must have been doing this.
In response to your first suggestion, do you mean have all these categories on the one site? I guess so, it would be a lot less work.
I initially chose best restaurants + city because it was getting a decent amount of searches. But I can see now that offering categorized listings is a better option.

I would ideally like to do my own sale, I don't have much experience though, that's why I thought the direct mail would be good, so they are already warmed up. I guess i could follow up with a walk in.

Well thanks for the advice guys and i'll probably post back with my results, hopefully with some extra cash in my bank

        Hey Chris,

Yes, having all the categories on one site will work the best. You would
just categorize the different types of "best" restaurants; Italian, Chinese, French, Seafood, etc.

Another way to promote your service is to offer a "free press release review" of the restaurant when they join your directory. You would highlight one of their "specialty items".

There are several FREE online PR sites that you can submit the release to.

Also, it is a lot easier to go into a business and offer them a free listing initially than try and sell them one. By giving away 5 or so free listings, this will help you get used to talking to businesses and then when you get them optimized and coming up in Google, you can walk into other restaurants with screenshots of first page listings as proof and be able to sell them a spot.

        This works like a charm!

Take action now and as Nike says " JUST DO IT!" lol

        Have fun with it Chris

This would be a hard sell the way you are approaching it as you are thinking from the perspective of a marketer instead of the business owner's you are approaching.

Personally, I would just do cold walk ins for this and probably within 10 people be able to sell it over and over. Email or direct mail a letter and you are talking hundreds or thousands of letters to get that same response.

Just go ahead and try it. No matter if anyone has done it before, it may work for you.

I have no agenda but to help those in the same situation. This I feel will pay the bills.

I think it's a great idea. Maybe think about cities abroad also to expand your reach.

    Hi Chris,

Walking in and talking with the manager or decision maker is the best way to go about marketing this type of website. I always call ahead, not say who I am, and just ask for the managers name and when he will be there next. Then I walk in and actually become a customer...buy something...have coffee and pie if you are going to restaraunts (don't go at a busy time)...compliment the waitress on something...and then ask if "manager's name" has a moment to speak to you. It works just about every time
Good luck!! You'll do great!!! It just takes being yourself and talking about what you know, which you have already done in this post
