Google Analytics doesn't count robots of searching engines like Google, Bing, etc which crawl Internet as well as of large SEO companies. So this is one of the reasons of different figures.

There is no 100% reliable analytics... Google is a good product that can help a marketer get a good understanding of their traffic. If you have enterprise sized needs, there are better solutions... much more expensive..

I once heard that Google is only 70% accurate. I checked around a bit because I was wondering why the discrepancy.

This answer seemed to make a lot of sense:

Remember that Analytics is Javascript based, so not everyone will get reported as some visitors have that switched off.

It's probably also near the end of your page so if users click away too fast the page may not load that code and no visit will be reported.
I believe a visitor's browser would have a lot to do with being counted, Firefox for one is very popular now and is favored by more and more people for it's stealth browsing capabilities. I even sometimes wonder that maybe Google can only see visitors from their own browser users.

Also came across this post as a couple open source free alternatives to the GA big dog:

For free/open source alternatives to GA, try:

Piwik - Web analytics - Open source

    Open Web Analytics

Piwik is the more mature of the two, but OWA looks nicer.
...Anyway, it seems pretty universal that people are questioning GA accuracy even in places like SEOmoz and Google's own forums and not much help!

    Good luck!

There's a big controversy as to whether or not Google Analytics hurts your site via the SERPs. Basically it boils down to this argument: With Google being able to track your site to the extent that Analytics does, it gives Google a better idea at the quality of your site. IE: How long visitors stay, CTR, etc. So some say that their sites of lower quality increased in rankings after they took GA off.

Personally, I have the attitude of "better safe than sorry" so after reading up on this GA theory, I took it off all my sites. Ironically, my rankings went up a tad (1-2 spots on various sites, not all) but the kicker was the highly obvious prices per click with my AdSense. I went from .15-.25c per click to upwards of a dollar on some of my sites.

Not saying you shouldn't use GA but where there's smoke, there's a at least some fire so I would use someone else, JUST in case.
