Hey guys,

I recently took on a new client and the problem is...

That he is functionally illiterate, therefore, it goes without saying that he doesn't have an e-mail address, and he will be incapable of even getting one.

What I usually do is just send invoices via PayPal to the clients e-mail and they pay me through that.

I tried doing it over the phone and later found out that I would have to be approved by Pay Pal to even offer that type of merchant service, for a few reasons I already know I won't be accepted.

I should also mention we live about 12 hours apart, so just popping into grab a cheque isn't really an option.

Anybody have any experience with this??

Thanks,

James

    where do you live?

if it's in the u.s then you could take check by phone
plus there are good feedback around here about authorize, net
haven't used them myself since I'm not in the U.S though

another option is to find a virtual terminal so you could type in the credit details yourself

    hope that helps

Yeah, I'm not in the states.

Authorize.net actually looks pretty interesting. I've seen it around but thought it was just an alternative to Pay Pal, looks a lil' more in depth.

    Thanks,

    James

Popping in for a check? Call me old school, but can't he drop a check in the mail to you? You said you weren't in the states, so I am not sure what it is called in your country, but as far as I know every country has some kind of service where physical items are still delivered by people!

I have had a lot of experience with this. I actually print out a physical invoice and put it in an envelope with a stamp and put it in a mailbox. They receive the invoice and write a check and send it back.

yes. clients from my country prefer to pay by check as well
but if i deposit a check from another country i'll have to wait about 3-4 weeks to get it cleared by the bank PLUS insane fees

to get a check by phone requieres you to have a u.s bank accont + some companies require a merchant account as do authorize.net

you'll need to find a virtual terminal in your country or you'll need to upgrade your paypal account to business (not premier) then you could send an invoice
to that person & type in his details whithout him have to own an email account, but maybe you should create an account for him, just tell him you do this so he;ll have a record of the deal & that way you could transfer the invoice to his cpa so he'll get a tax deduction (write-off)

sound doggie, I know, but remember that he approved the deal, so you're not doing anything that he did not agree to

      this is off-shore-offline

      P.S
with paypal you acutally create a product & then you recieve a link to it, there you type in his credit info

My bad, cheque isn't even an option because he would prefer to pay by credit card.

Haha, let's clear up that I'm in Canada..

The Pay Pal idea would work, but if you don't have a PayPal account it requires the billing address and everything, I don't think he'd feel comfortable giving me that information. I could be wrong.

    Thanks,

    James

Even if you set up a regular merchant account - it's going to ask for the billing address on his card. Plus, a merchant acct. is going to have a minimum monthly fee of $20 or so. If you're only running one client through it each month it's going to cut into your profit.

If it were me - I'd set up the paypal account for him using an email address that you have access to.

Set up your recurring invoice and then get him on the phone and enter his CC info into the paypal account on his behalf.

100% up front payment before you do a lick of work.

He can certify the cheque at his bank and send it to you by overnight courier. Certifying means the bank sets aside that money and guarantees he's got it ready for this specific cheque.

You don't do a thing until the cheque is in your bank, cleared, and the money is smiling at you from in your account. Whole process shouldn't take more than a couple of days.

You can always go find good qualified clients. Clients who are a great fit based on need, budget and personality. Don't get desperate to get this one square peg to fit into the round hole.

Yeah, he still wants to pay by credit card.

He's a nice old guy that's been screwed about and is really taking a leap of faith since he really has no clue about this internet thing-a-ma-jig.

I talked to him today, and he kept talking about "Its" on Google.. I assumed he meant clicks...

I've been working with him for a couple months already, just now our middle man, his employee, who was giving him the invoices has quit, and so it's kind of like we're having to re-figure it all our from scratch.

I'm not making a ton of money from this guy, but, sometimes you get more satisfaction knowing that your helpin' somebody out.

Of course the bugger makes $9,000+ each kitchen he sells!! Haha.

    Thanks for all the advice!

    Assumed? Don't do that!

"Say, when you say 'Its' when we're talking about Google, what do you mean?"

Maybe you can find a local buddy with a cc merchant account...who you can trust to take the payment and then give you the $$ in cash or cheque.

I am still not seeing why he can't drop a check in the mail. Freshbooks can snail mail him an invoice.

Not sure about your country, but try the Square app, you can manually input the transaction from your phone.

One of my client's CFO cut's the checks every 1st and 15th, mails them out.

I usually forget it is even coming , since freshbooks automatically e-mails the client, then they send a check.

I have a different, but similar client that is computer “illiterate” and is the perfect example of business owners just wanting someone to “take care” of everything so he can run his business.

When I had to sign him up with new hosting: I used my hostgator affil link, AND he paid me $75 extra for my time (10 minutes).

When he got the fresh books invoice, the internet kicked his ass, he paid me $50 extra to login and use his CC to pay my self..

He has a client of his own that wants to use a CC and has no way of accepting CC, so I mentioned why doesn’t he do like I do with him, use fresh books, it integrates with PayPal. He needed fresh books set up and integrated, an extra $100 there.

Just keep in mind the problem of having a problem of trying to figure out how someone can pay you that wants to pay you, is one of the best problems you can have.
