One way I created to bring in some of this "Tourist Cash"....was to place a Sign on the Front Counter of Hotels/Motels.......offering "KIDS EAT FREE" cards to parents of Room Guests. (See Photo Below)

The Front Desk Clerks HANDS one of our "Kids Eat Free" cards to every parent that registers.

This Card allow the Holder to take their kids to one of the 6 participating restaurants where their kids can "Eat for Free"! That's right, NO CHARGE!

Here's how it goes;
I get 6 Motels to agree to place my sign on the front desk counter and hand a Card to parents when they check in....as a "Special Gesture" to their guests with kids.

(You think the motels would go for this?)

I then contact 6 restaurants that agree to NOT CHARGE for Kids when a parent presents a "Kids Eat Free" card.

I started out charging restaurants $30/mo per motel (6 Motels x $30 = $180/mo per restaurant)....and have since raised the monthly fee.

So...again, I'm NOT "selling" anything here.....just offering a possibility for YOU to make some "OFFLine Moola....from this info.

Last summer I had 60 restaurants participating in 5 towns.

Oh yeah!....I just toss this "Stuff" up for the heck of it....mostly...cause I'm BORED!...and need a few minutes break from watching "Star-Trek" 1,2, 3, 4....etc!

I wasn't clear from your first post if you had done it either, and I'm fairly intelligent, because you wrote things in it like, "You think the motels would go for this?" which could be taken to mean you're asking, "do you think my idea will work?" implying that you hadn't done it.

This is a very clever strategy. A win-win-win-win situation (you-visitor-motel owner-restaurant owner). I would definitely give this a try if I was in a touristic city but I guess the same principle could be applied for other niches as well.

My question is: How do you start? By talking to the motels or restaurants?

I've contacted a few hotels in my area and they are REALLY reluctant to give out any references to other restaurants since they want people to eat at their OWN restaurant...it's the second top revenue for them. Top one being hotel rooms of course.

Anyhow, that's the feedback that I got from 2 big hotel chains.

I guess you could target hotels/motels that don't have a restaurant...

That is exactly what Don does and very successfully so. He makes a mockup sample first, shows it to the hotel manager and gets their approval in writing. Then gets them to tell the restaurants that they would recommend so now he has a somewhat of an "in" when approaching the restaurants. Takes some balls but it's doable.

Guess we won't see him for a while according to Paul, and even if he is let back in, which is prob shortly, who knows what Don himself will do then... Yea, he can be annoying but also very inspiring, like put a fire under you know what. Personally, I love his posts.

You can add some of your own twists to this strategy. For example - if you live in a tourist city then instead of going for the restaurant-motel combination, you can try the strategy on car rental agency-restaurant combo. For example - convince some cab agencies to hand out cards to their clients offering free meals to their kids. They shouldn't have any hesitation at all. Many tourists would book cabs to visit different places in the city. Instead of cab agencies, you can even hand out cards to many cab drivers to give them to their passengers.

Think of other services these tourists might need when they are visiting your town and approach those businesses with your offer. It could be shopping places and stores which are flocked by the tourists.

Why wait for next year? Better to start now. I would go in with the idea that you are in the process of lining up for the next "snow bird" season and that you are willing to give everyone a great discount if they sign up now.

And, that when your season hits full swing, not only have you already made some money but you also have the experience and lots of contacts. Tell them that when season is in, they have the first right to reserve their guaranteed spot, IF they sign up in "low" season..
