My Newbie (Minor) Success Story

I am new to this business stuff and the last couple months I have been trying to figure out what exactly fit my personality well so that I could dive right in. I mean there is PPC, Online, Offline, SEO, Sales, Copyrighting, and the list goes on and on.

After a couple weeks of regular forum reading I felt comfortable doing SEO, Website design for small businesses, and some different forms of marketing. I wanted to get on the move and my first decision was to hire my sister to do the selling on a commission basis. She is in her early 20's and is trying to get through college so I figured I could throw her 20% if I generated the lead and 40% if she did all the foot work herself.

I got a couple small business to be part of my portfolio by offering them a free website and 6 months hosting if I could use their sites and business as references and I got a couple testimonials from them.

The sites are not ultra fancy because all these businesses need is a web presence and a way to be found on Google. They take me about 4 hours total of work. I also then offer SEO work to these portfolio clients.

Now this is opportunity I stumbled onto that I wanted to share with everyone else.

I made a decision to get an LLC created by a lawyer I have used for years because of a Worker's Comp case. I told him what I needed and what I was doing and he became very interested. We spoke for about half an hour and by the end of the meeting I had agreed to get his firm's website ranked on the first page of Google for only 1 search term. I did the SEO work in exchange for the creation of my LLC.

Now I had already looked at his site and thought that it would be very easy to rank the site. It was 3 years old and was just being out ranked for silly stuff because it was not even close to being optimized. I live in a town of about 7,000 people so needless to say it wasn't hard.

I ended up out sourcing the work to guy on Fiverr that did some quality back linking. I ended up ranking him on the first page for 4 different long tail keywords and to sweeten the pot I did his Google places listing. My plan is to always over deliver whenever there is an opportunity.

He was extremely excited and started to get a few more calls and traffic to the site. One of his partners heard about the work and got with me today and is excited about me optimizing the website and ranking them for more terms.

Newbies, you gotta understand something. Yes it is scary and yes new things make us feel uncomfortable.

BUT unless you take some action you are never going to stumble across any gems.

This is my first semi big job and because this firm is a big fish in a small pond their testimonial will go a very long way for me.

My Advice

First, you gotta get out of the mindset there is some magic system that will help you rocket to success. Hint: There will never be, so stop looking. That is why you have probably bought a ton of WSOs and are still on the side lines.

Just get out there and do it, because if you put the knowledge you have learned from this great forum you have a great chance to succeed, but the first thing you have to do is try.

Good luck, now get out there.

That's some great work and advice right there.

I'm starting out the same way and have done a few SEO jobs for my local sports club and the dog walker

Its absolutely crazy that once you start, you start seeing opportunities everywhere or they just land at your feet while your chatting to someone. I guess i still don't appreciate all I've learned over the last while but most of this is like ancient greek to the 'everyday joe' and you dont even need to be much of a salesman to close them.

      Keep it up !!

This is a pretty interesting case study and shows how valuable KNOWLEDGE really is.

The lawyer got some first page rankings for basically filing out a sheet of paper for you because he knew how easy it is to set up an LLC.

You got some legal work done because you knew how easy it would be to pay some dude a few bucks to build backlinks.

BOth of you probably feel like he got the better deal and are happy campers.

Exactly. In my state there are a couple fees that are associated with setting up an LLC but it was more for me getting my foot in the door with them which would lead to more work down the road. Thanks for the response!

I wanted to give you guys a quick update on how the meeting went.

I spoke with the only tech savvy partner of the firm and he had realized that they were under utilizing their website and wanted to expand their base. After talking to him he all but gave me the green light but wanted a formal proposal drawn up before any work had been done.

I found out the last time they had any work done they ended up spending around 5,000 dollars on the website (I just asked and he told me) so I already know about what to charge because I know what they are willing to pay.

He also said that he wanted me to take care of the website and said he would be comfortable with a monthly charge. He also encouraged me not to talk to any other firms lol.

Be mindful that this just started with a simple question and my willingness to take it to another level.

Good luck, now get out there.

Congratulations on your success, Breakinglink. The business model you discussed is so simple, but it is the simple things that we often overlook, which can allow us to be highly successful when we just implement those simple things. :-)

So many people talk about doing local SEO for businesses on the Warrior Forum, that I think many people get the impression that everyone is already doing it or we take for granted what a powerful business model that really is. Way to take the concept and actually run with it!!!! :-)

I wanted to leave one quick update to those interested in how things have played out. I had a semi-formal meeting with all the partners of the law firm today just to talk about what my research for the region so that I could give them the best price and meet their needs.

Orginally, the "tech savvy" partner had asked me to rank them for 34 case types they handle in 24 cities. Which was going to end up costing them 20,000 per month. Needless to say I knew that was not going to fly so I made a joke about it with the other partners and we quickly moved to narrow the SEO work down to 6 cities for 6 case types.

36 total and I charge $500 a month per 20 terms. I talked them into making it an even 40 so I am looking at 1,000 a month from this one client not including the 1,000 for set up.

Now, just because I want to give my clients the best opportunity I went ahead and suggested a possible Lead Gen campaign instead if they did not feel comfortable with the price (which they were on the fence) and offered to service the same area with my own sites and charge $30 per charge.

They want actual proposals and want to make a final decision next week. So as you can see just a little bit of networking plus a little follow through has made this a very big opportunity for me.

Do I have anything in writing? Nope, but they are setting up meetings and are showing interest because they see the pure upside to this.

I will give one last update upon closing the deal. Win or lose I will let you all know.

I wish you all the success in the world. Now get out there and do something.
