I've been racking my brain on this because I am not sure if its pure evil or genius. I am not new to IM but am with offline clients.

I have a client who wants to get maximum exposure in the serps, so he wants me to try and rank his site to show up whenever someone searches for his competitors by name.

I told him i would need to do some research and get back to him. As i began to look i thought that this could be one of the easiest strategies in the world or i could be burning future bridges in that niche.

I don't really see any harm in this but on the otherhand if I ever lose him as a client, i'm screwed if I try to work with the competitor..

Can I get an experts advice please?

No. I am asking if its good advice to target competitors sites as search terms to rank for.

For example, instead of a customer searching for website designer seattle , they are searching ABC company Seattle. With ABC company being the competitor of my client.

I don't have any problems in the moral side, its just business. I just don't want to shoot myself in the foot!

Absolutely! I do this all the time....plus I have software that helps me with it.

    Not evil, extremely common tactic.

I agree. It is a common tactic - and works exceptionally well if you have your own blog network, where you can control everything at will.

I don't see any evil in that.
