Guys & Gals.. this is a method that works period.. I do it and it works... Google places is a gold mine.. 90% of local business listings are unclaimed and that is a fact.. the business owner is either too damn busy or they don't have a clue how to claim and setup..

I will do a quick search for my city.. ie..toronto dentist, toronto plumber then check out the first 2 pages of GP and check out who has their page claimed and who hasn't..

Make a list of unclaimed businesses.. Start hitting the pavement and educating the owners on GP that they have not claimed it and they are losing out on traffic and leads.. Charge anywhere from $200 to $500 per pop for set up..

Done deal.. Seriously guys this is a no brainer and works.. Stop being lazy and go make some money!!

I thought I read here that currently (since change from GP to Goolgle Local+) that it is not longer possible to check who has claimed their listing and who has not?

Are you say we can check now?

It's a good way to start, but like anything it's starting that relationship. People will have their guards up, find a way to reduce their risk and show proof.

Indeed, it's a great method. A lot of people can do a great job, but they just don't know how and why. We can help them and charge them for the "trouble".

EDIT BY MODERATOR: Why does your location say "Chicago" when your IP is in Romania?
I'm staying in Romania for a while but I'm from Chicago, is there a problem?

While logged in to Google, visit the Google places listing and click on 'Manage this page'. You will be presented with the following pages, respectively:

Add, Edit, or Suspend Listing ... (Unclaimed listing)
Tip: Before you create a business listing ... (Claimed listing)

I was told that they are working on this.

Edit: I have also noticed, that, if you view the source code of the listing page, and the word 'claim' shows up, then it is an unclaimed listing.

Just tried this and it seems to work in finding those with unclaimed listings. Now just need a method to automate finding these listings instead of just going through them one by one.

So now my question is when I'm contacting these businesses whether by email or direct mail piece do I still reference Google Places in my message or use Google+ Local instead? Is it just the name that changed now and our message should still be the same when prospecting for clients to get them listed in the 7 pack?

I had to check the date of the OP... thought it was a random thread brought back from a couple years ago.

    Of course it works.

It may be quite easy as you've said but I agree with newbizideas312. The relationship will be the key to a long-lasting deal; you can even get referral sales from a good business relationship.

Almost anyone with a consultancy business is doing this.. Nothing new here really.

But like the OP said, this method 110% works.. So if you haven't already, you might want to have a stab at it.. If you develop a unique approach to this, it could be a great way to get a few more clients
