So once you're in the big 8 or so on getlisted, the next task is to focus on both local and niche citation sources. Obviously you should check out your competition for this, because they'll likely be listed in little community directories that are moderate authority and often free. Search the local community for free citation or directory sites as well.

For the niche citations, do the same thing. Just make sure you don't waste a lot of effort on forums and other crap. Focus on directories where you can list for free.

That article is okay but keep in mind it is written in March 2009.

No need to submit to major paid directories unless you an abundance of competition. Also, press releases will help. Don't believe that article. However, in all respects, you should not have to pay for any submittal fees...unless it is the cost of outsourcing it to someone. Just steer away from paying to be included in directories.

One good way to find what citations sites to use will be to search on the keyword phrases for your client.

See what comes up on the first two or three pages for each phrase.

Add your client to those for sure. It can depend on the geographical area so change you location (Google search - change location) when you do the search if you are out of your clients area. You can do the same for Bing and Yahoo if you like.

Otherwise, use your NAP (name, address, and phone number) on many other sites including web2.0 especially. You don't necessarily need to stick to just directories.

check on your local competition. you want to include local citations as well. check local tv stations, radio etc. Also, depending on the profession you're promoting, pick industry-specific citations/directories.

yes its right and you can also search via Google with your keyword plus area and search for biz directories and you will get many. If you need a high pr list of websites for biz directories for free 250+ citations. Contact me.

I highly recommend adding citations to local classified ads and directories run by local news sites.

For classified ads, you can optimize title, description and put in a citation just like you would a blog post or a YouTube video. There are tons of small local classifieds that won't give you much in the way of leads, but they're local, and the more places you put your NAP, the better.

Is it better to just put NAP, or include a whole description, either a few sentences or a paragraph with the NAP?

I would make the ad real. After all, you never know who may stumble upon it. Make it real and be sure to put your NAP at the bottom. It's better that people have the business contact info anyway.
