if i wanted to do local seo for a client and had to purchase the domain should i do a keyword enriched url (nichetownstate or something along the lines of that) or stick with the clients name if it already has keywords in the name.. for example lets say the client was a Mason and the name of the company was ABC Masonry & Construction.. is that sufficient enough? hope you guys can help me out, thanks!!!

Either really as it will be more dependent on registering them and reviewing them with multiple accounts/feedback on G maps properly and such IF its local you are after.

Make the url more specific to local and job description like masonintown. This is will give good start for SEO ranking.
Also, when you try to expand it to other cities do it with inner pages. However, you should be careful with the scope of the client's business. If the scope is more than the specific town then you need to go with url having main business name and localize it with inner pages.
In addition you may add phone number and address on the local pages with google map which will give more leverage to local searches

No you must get a Keyword rich domain name for your client. After all these updates, Domains with keywords continue to appear in the search results. Moreover your SEO effort is halfdone by getting the right keyword rich domain especially beneficial for local search listings.

IMHO It is important to include the keyword in the domain name, while including the area of the business beneficial too in some sense, it might however limit the possibility that people outside the locality be interested on the business. This could hurt your client if they are aiming to go further out their loacal area. If SEO have been done to the first then it would be best to take advantage of it.

Depends what do you care about SEO? Or converting?

    1. If the company is branded well the url should be that branding. Customers respond to brands. They will feel more at ease knowing the company is branded and not just using chicagomason.com
    2. Who says a company only needs one url? (You could have one or more keyword rich URLs as well)
    3. Why not make those keyword rich urls into micro sites that link back to the main site?

To get offline businesses you have to think like an offline business. Remember we make websites to be viewed by people not just for google bots.

BING! Aaron hit the nail right on the head. Why settle for just one outcome, when you can easily have both?

Branding is CRUCIAL when it comes to converting well, but I see your argument in terms of creating a domain that naturally flows with the keywords you are targetting.

Therefore, create a MAIN SITE with branding, logos, company information, etc. as well as microsites to fit whichever keywords you are going after.

Let your client in on this. Explain (briefly) the importance of a branded domain as well as a microsite to generate the traffic they NEED as a business. The more you get them to understand that they are LOSING money by not grabbing the traffic, the more money you can make.

      Best of luck,
      Jon.

For SEO purpose, always keyword+location, which works out very well for me, because in this way, google can understand whats the site about straight away---- hehe... just on page SEO stuff, how the site view it by google.

    Hope it helps

Exact match domains aren't as relevant for rankings anymore and branding for your client is more important in the long run and won't be subject to algorithm changes.

That being said, I've ranked A LOT of clients sites successfully without any extensive on page SEO & content, let alone a keyword rich domain.
