Who keeps the contract?

Assuming a contract is laid out for services you're providing. They read through the terms and conditions, what you could do for them etc.

A paper is signed. Is that kept by me or them? Or should there be 2 sets of papers and get the client to sign both and each copy is kept by each party?

    I'd make sure both parties have a copy.

    Instead of drawing up 2 contracts & making them go thru & sign both of them, I'd just wait until the contract is signed by both parties, then make a copy.

    That way, everything is already filled out on the 2nd one.

    Is getting them to sign on the contract, then you get back to your home/office, scan and send them the copy of the contract, is that feasible?

    If they agree to do it that way, sure.

    If not, you could just meet up at the library to sign (assuming they are a local client)

    That way they are present for both the signing & the copying.

    Some people might be paranoid that you could switch something in the contract before you send them their copy, so I'd try to get it copied while they were with you.

    Down here, the library charges either 5 or 10 cents per page to make copies.

    Also you could give them an unsigned version now and copy the signed version to mail to them a day or two later.

    It's easier to just get two signed copies right there.
    I try to use a blue pen.
    An agreement in black makes a signature in blue stand out.

    Now you have a copy with them agreeing to hold up their side, and they have a copy with you agreeing to hold up your side.

    It only takes a few minutes to fill out a second.
    You just have them review one after going over it, while filling out the second.

    Don't leave and go get a copy. Do it right there.

    I've done a contract with a business man in another state. The contract was developed, put in pdf format and emailed to him without my signature. He signed and faxed back to me. I signed and faxed back to him. He had a copy of the original so he knew there were no changes when both our signatures were on the document.

    Printing 2 copies sounds best so far, leaves out possibilities of "no photocopier", "no I want another copy now".

    Now this is really nitpicking it, but do you guys staple your proposal together with the contract or bind or..?
