Effective Backlinking / Article Marketing

Hi guys,

I'm new to the marketing side of the web. I've done web design for awhile, but not much SEO work. I have a site I need to rank well for some high competition keywords. (web design) What is the best way to go about this? Is article marketing still effective as long as they are decent quality articles?

Also, where should I post the articles, any suggested sites? I have a list of top 50 PR websites you can post articles on. Should I post articles on all of them, or target certain ones? I have almost 100 articles and trying to figure out the most effective way to use them to get backlinks and or generate traffic.

Please, any ideas are welcome.

Articles still work- but included with everything thing else.

    Here is my process:

    1. Google Places - even if its not local focused- still worth it
    2. Press Release - Wide Distribution - $199
    3. Directory Submissions - BUT only paid ones that allow multiple Links -free listings almost never work out...to much work for site owner so doesn't get done - check out directory maximizer.

So far you wont have massive results you are building a base....then go to articles, my suggestion use only orginal articles -start with EzineArticles.com as a start.

They are slow (and fussy) to accept - enough to get started?

Think long term as this takes a while to get some traction...the more articles the better.....

Hey crazydirthead, I don't know if that was a typo? "I have a site I need to rank well for some high competition keywords. (web design)", but you'll be far better off going for the keyword "web design your city name" or "your city name web design". The term "web design" is far too generic, too expensive and not targeted enough. You'll also need a boatload of cash to compete for this term.

A better return would probably be PPC and as Paul suggested "Local Places". Just ensure your address, telephone number are listed on the footer of your site and the exact wording of the address is the same on any directories you list with!

I think I do have the local down pretty well. And yes, I am targeting my local area specifically. Who knows, maybe I'll go national someday lol. I do live in a metro area though as well so it is high competition. I'm trying to start by targeting my suburb first. I also have my address in my footer and all local submissions identical to it. I'm still on like page 7 though, I think mostly because I have basically no back links other than business directories. Questions -
What is a press release? Is this something online, or do you mean like newspaper?
Thanks for the link to directory maximizer, i'll have to give that a shot, I jsut paid for another and it didn't seem to do much.

Do you recommend that I use all of my articles from a single account? new articles for each account? How should I disperse them? Thanks in advance.

if you are going to rank really high competitive keywords like "web design ", just press release or article submission wont take you too far. True, they can be used to bring in traffic, but they are not good enough to boost your site ranking. After google recent updates, many tactics that used to work well do not hold much value any more. Based on my own experience, one thing that still works is to set up your own blog network. Purchase a few high PR domains, set them up and make them related to your niche. Blast them with all other tactics you would do, and gradually link your salve sites to your main site. There are many good posts on how to set up your own blog network without backfire yourself. This is one of the few tactics that still are effective.
    Hope it helps!

Thanks for the reply, I haven't heard of this before, I'll have to research it. I just want to clarify a little though since I'm unfamiliar with it. How many sites should a few be(2,3,7,12)? Also, what constitutes a high PR(how high is high)?

thanks again for everyones input. Except the guy above me

Yes ofcourse. article marketing is still effective so long as the articles are great and informative. You can try Ezine, its my first choice. You can also try to use other effective methods like press releases and social bookmarking for backlinks.
