Are you actually doing it?

Time and time again i went to bed with the drive to start talking to business owners and selling, and woke up with no drive.

One day I met a friend who came from albania when he was younger and he has done sales for a while. I learned he was making 200 cold calls a day selling gym memberships doing very well.

I asked him to be a partner in my business starting tomorrow (this was a while ago) and he said OK without asking many questions.

I woke up with zero drive to make calls... went to the gym and worked out... came home with zero drive to make calls... and my friend called me telling me he was on his way over. I got a little nervous and drank a cup of coffee to get some energy.

We sat down and made some edits to the script which was POINTLESS.

He said watch this... grabbed the phone book... made a call on speaker from his cell phone... got rejected immediately. We laughed and he did it again... We laughed and i learned what edits i needed to make to the script (i'm the marketing guru).... I made a few calls... got a few nos and not interesteds.... made new edits to the script with a different "close"... made 4 more calls and got 2 leads. these were "email follow up" leads. these were people showing INTEREST in my offer and company.

15 total calls and we went from instant rejection... to people listening... to people saying yes.

this was my first day ever cold calling and it's the reason I am now self employed today.

edits we made to the script:

first it seemed we were offering a "product" too quickly and they rejected

second it seemed we were giving them the option to say no (asking are you interested)

third we realized that we weren't able to express the real value we could provide by talking over the phone and not being in person

fourth we finally figured out a way to talk about the value we could provide and ALSO close on a positive note with a direct contact number/email to a business owner. We can make valuable offers whenever we want to these owners now, including the immediate potential sale of the service that they showed interest in and gave us their email to learn about.

.....................

Are you doing this? Or are you posting on the forum being theoretical? Because my first run of the script had me thinking I was going to be rich.... SOON TO LEARN THAT IT WOULD BANKRUPT ME.

Made some edits... Now i don't have a boss.

edit: wanted to add in that this was a while ago. started outsourcing a lot more of my tasks and now i have time to post for you guys on the forum

    Funny.

I went to get the oil changed on my car this past Sunday. Took my laptop and wifi hotspot with me.

Those other poor suckers in the waiting room were $30 - $40 poorer when they left. I was $200 richer.

Motivation has to come from within you. Nobody can do it for you, and you can't fake it.

I've been working 7 days a week for a long time (with a break in the middle for my immigration non-work period)...since 2006. Nobody makes me. I don't really need the extra money. But am I EVER pushed by a huge sense of urgency, the need to get things done and help people. It's often annoying--I'd rather work than watch a movie, and I wish that weren't the case. But there are so many projects, and I want them all done. And then my mind will serve up new projects...

So how long did you stick with the calling, working on your approach until it clicked for you?

Great post. It's very often that I wonder why I'm even replying to things when it's often the SAME people asking for advice or hypothetical questions yet they aren't here saying "I did this and the response was this, can you help?"

Those that do are often off and running quickly and you don't have long threads of them procrastinating and refusing to fix and learn things for themselves.

Most of the people we take on as clients could do what we do, they just don't want to or don't want to spend the time or think it's beneath them. I would say 95% of the reason I own a business is because other people are too lazy or unmotivated to do what I do. The other 5% are business owners that are too busy and are thriving and just can't do it for themselves. It's not a bad thing, and it's brought me to where I am today...but it's an observation.

Good for you for challenging those that are sitting here watching everyone else succeed!
