Promo with Club or Promo then Club ?

For experienced SMS providers which approach would you consider to be most successful at building opt-in databases.

1. Promo and Specials Club Combined

In this approach, the person is opting in to a Club, and for joining the club, they get a promo. For example:

Text "Burger" to 12345 to join our monthly specials club and get a 25% off coupon. Exp 12/02

2. Promo with second opt-in for club.

In this approach, the person texts to get a one time coupon. No opt-in occurs, they just get a coupon on their phone. The ad has no mention of a Club.

Text "Burger" to 12345 to get 25% off coupon. Exp 12/02

Then, along with the coupon is the words Reply "JoinUS" to opt-in for ongoing specials" which opts them into the monthly club.

Any real life success and experience is appreciated.

    Approach #1 is good for using "in-store" to let a restaurant or pizza shop or any retail outlet build a list of their current customers.

    #2 is better for building a list from the 'outside' ... meaning if that same restaurant or pizza shop or retail outlet has current ads ... they can place their mobile call-to-action in it to increase effectiveness and offer coupon to them. By doing so, you're letting consumer decide if they want to be on list.
