How to do Website Redesign for your clients?

Hi guys,

If you are doing website redesign and they have an existing website, do you ask them to push/transfer the domain name to you? Or change their hosting to your hosting servers?

Maybe the best thing to do is register a new domain name for them?
What do you guys do?

Thanks for your help.

We have some website redesign clients that have switched their hosting over to us and some have stayed where they are for various reasons. Usually they will do it if you offer good reason for them to and can host it for a better price. But some have already paid in advance or simply don't want to switch. Basically what I am saying is that it will depend on the client and the situation.

These are both usually pretty simple issues. The only reason it should matter if you want to transfer hosting is if they're either on another marketing firms host servers, or you want to charge them for hosting, or both.

If it's on another firms hosting, you usually just have to call them up and tell them to change the nameservers in their domain registrar to whatever you nameservers are. They would need permission from your client though.

If it's on the client's hosting just ask them for the login details or do a screenshare. I've never done a screenshare before for a client, but I'm sure there's a service you can use.

One thing I always do before a redesign is back up the existing site. I have mac and use an app called SiteSucker. This way I can reference all the information as I recreate the site.
