Return Address or No Return Address

For those versed in Direct Mail have a question. Is it better to have a return address on envelope or not? I have always put one on there but I know people who do not.

In your opinion which is better?

    Hi there,

It all depends on whether or not you want to track non-deliverables.

Putting a generic address without company name is the norm. If you put the company name, it screams solicitation.

    All the best,

    Sasha.

Gotcha, that is what I figured. I have done a pretty good number with only a couple ever returned so I think I will try it with no return address. Thanks Sasha!

If you know you have a clean list, you could probably leave it off altogether. It can increase the curiosity factor to get your envelope opened.

Otherwise, Sasha is correct: Street address only, no name or business name.

Also, what you're describing is known as the "sneak-up approach" or "A-pile mail."

        So, a couple other tips:

==> Hand write the recipient's name and address in blue ink (or use a good handwriting font if you're printing the envelopes.

==> Use a live stamp (not a postage meter or presort standard indicia) and apply it crooked or sideways or upside down. Even better, use multiple stamps instead of a single stamp.

==> Use an odd-size envelope instead of a #10 business envelope. Something smaller, or maybe a greeting card envelope.
