What are you focusing your efforts on selling in 2013? I've seen a lot of focus on mobile services, and reputation management as of late.

Any other services that you're focusing on?

I know most will disagree, but I still focus on web design. In my small area people aren't as hip as I'd like them to be, so most don't have sites. I almost always upsell however.

My most recent client is a butcher. I'm making a site and adding reputation management. He was shut down because his neighbors complained, but he still won the battle. His business was hurt pretty badly from that. So he needs a site for an online presence (already has an fb which his girls have done well with), good reviews to show up in google and we're doing a video so when people search for him, they get nothing but good indications.

It seems like people are always looking for the hottest thing, but if you put yourself in front of business owners they always need something different and if listened to, they will tell you what they want out of someone like you (internet marketer).

I suppose it's a little different when you cold call or cold anything, because you have to mention something you're selling. But recently I started this referral program and it turns every client into three, so far. They just call me and tell me what their situation is and trust I'll get the job done because I came highly recommended by the last guy.

I went through a weird selling phase recently and it always felt like an uphill battle. But like I said I started a referral program and I really don't do any selling. My entire business model flipped right-side up in a month. I've closed 6 new clients in just under a month all because of a referral program. I realize this is somewhat irrelevant, but it should help with your selling situation as it did mine.

Can you tell us more about how your referral program works? Do you offer a discount or an special incentive?

Generating leads and sales for local businesses. I build the sites and promote them and retain ownership of the sites. I earn commissions (big commissions averaging $400 per sale) for new business generated.

This model is awesome because I earn money every month from the same clients and I retain ownership of the sites I build. This is my only offline model and one I hope to scale up big time in 2013.

The potential is practically unlimited in any industry simply by acquiring new clients in other towns. It's an easy sell because clients only pay me when they get new business. The legwork includes finding good clients (I have a list of criteria) and negotiating commissions. I have the infrastructure set up using a call center and contact forms.

This model requires much less work in terms of acquiring clients and instead working to generate more business for my clients, which is what I like doing.

how do you track the sales to get your commissions? Sounds like you aren't selling the leads and leave it up to the business to close sales and give you a report?

      Hello,

Very good ideea how you run your business. I was thinking to make sales to local businesses (using like a leanding page or a 3 page website) and get paid for the sales, but as a newbie in consulting, I don't know exactly how to track the sales (the business owner maybe can say.....well Mr. consulting, this month you send me only leads, but there was no sales, so I'll pay you only for the leads). I don't know, maybe is something I don't understand but I'll be happy to get in touch with you. BTW...very nice blog.
      Regards

My focus is on one niche vs. working with everyone.

Reasoning behind this is it is a lot less work. Don't know why it took me that long to figure out.

Build out related niche sites to link to my clients.
Use the same templates to build the sites.
Use the same writers that understand the industry and can pump out content.
Use the same templates for videos.
    etc
    etc

At it's simplest form you just have to tell any new clients about it. You will need to get a few small clients, and after you close and tell them the price. You say something like "You know recently I've started a referral program. If you send any paying customers my way I'll take 75$ off of your next payment." It's legal in most areas, but check with your local courts just in case.
