Cold calls from the Philippines?

Does anyone have experience with filipino telemarketers working from home via SKYPE (as opposed to working from a call center)? How's the sound quality over skype with their internet connection?

From what I understand the internet connection quality is overall quite poor, but the good outsourcers will mention that they have good internet in their profiles.

I used to do this. I'm not sure about quality, but I never got complains from my caller. Out of 200 calls, I'd say about 60-70 were connected with the decision maker, and I had 3 appointments. I paid him $0.30 a call and $10 per appointment.

But I don't like the quality of the leads to be honest. It's much easier to close a deal when you get the prospects coming to YOU instead.

I have someone working for me from Philippines and i see no problem with his internet speed, he's from Cebu and they already are using fiber optic cables which is 10times more faster than ordinary internet connection from other locations in their country. The best way to know if your outsource guy has quality internet connection is to have them do some speedtest before hiring them.

I never thought of having them do a speedtest. Thanks for this tip. Do you use one of the free speed test tools online? (Sorry a little off topic)

Internet connection is good and I usually ask them for a speedtest as a requirement.

As for calling skills...there are some good ones on there.

As mentioned above I wasn't happy with quality of leads in all honesty.

      A tip:

Get them to record all of their calls, if you get a lead get the caller to send you the audio file of that phone call so you can see how the whole conversation went.

This saved me from ringing "leads" that weren't really leads but just people who were trying to get him off of the phone with him and sounded quite agitated.

But overall I think they are good...just choose the right one and put them on a trial.

Yes, I agree with that, Filipino english are far more better than American english, their grammar and the way they speak is excellent.

I am currently using a PH caller. I dunno if it's the speed, I do have complains that the prospects couldn't hear clearly what she said or there is loud echo.

She is good nevertheless, we did about 40-50 calls and got 2 appointments.

We suspect that it was the lack of equipment that resulted in poor quality voices. (She doesn't have a headset).

Thank you guys for your valuable insight. I see most of you just use telemarketers to make appointments. What about having them make the sale, is it a bad idea?

    Hi there,

We use a team in PH to qualify leads that works quite well for us. Initially, we had them use SKYPE but the call quality wasn't consistent which meant the results weren't consistent.
We then had one of our tech guys build a cheap Asterisk VOIP system and we shipped them the computer and they use that. Took about 2 days to set up but the call quality is wonderful and we can even listen in on calls from where we are (NL).

If you have a decent team there, it's worth investing a little into them.

    All the best,

    Sasha.

Honestly speaking their internet speed is not so good. But if you hire a whole company for telemarketing job then I am sure they will manage high speed internet.

Do they do cold calls or only appointment setting? I need someone to take care of all the sales process.

  • I have an old business friend who owns a PH call center for straight cold call sales, not just appointments, and for him it seems to work well. The Filis are generally smart, work hard, speak good English and of course it's extremely cost effective.

Of course the language barrier isn't going to be AS legit as an American telemarketing team, but that just depends on if you want to pay $9-12/hour to a High School dropout in rehab with no car and has a piss poor work ethic.

As a Filipino telemarketer and Virtual Assistant, my heart overflows while reading the thread. We frequently use Skype for cold calling, appointment setting and inbound & outbound support . No issues at all here in Cavite, Philippines.

Maybe, the only thing that could get us trouble if the client won't pay us on time. :-)

I own two call centers with over 500 sales agents in Manila. Our agents spend all day long pulling credit cards on outbound dialing, and they do a pretty good job with it. We of course aren't using skype, but instead a ViciDial platform on large scale fiber lines. Filipino's can definitely pull credit cards from consumers as well as do lead gen. I don't really think though that you want to go with someone that is making calls from Skype. The voice quality just won't be there on a consistent basis, and the quality of person you are hiring probably isn't going to be great. You are much better off going to a call center that charges hourly rates. You can expect to pay between $8 and $10 per hour for agents based out of Manila, and around $6 to $9 per hour for those based out of Gensan or Davao. How many leads per day are you looking to do?

  • I've used a few call centers overseas and I have to say the (noise) is ridiculous in the background (I wont mention the company name). However I've had a few freelancers work from there homes via Skype. And the turn out wasn't that bad ...didn't really have any connection issues. Give it a try see how it goes weigh out the pros & cons.

Hi! I'm from the Philippines! What I can tell you is that the internet connection here is not really good on some parts of the country.

      Tip:

Be aware of the location of your telemarketer. If they live within the city, good! But if they live in the province then I'm sure the quality of the call is going to be bad. Its all about location actually because most internet providers can't cater to the needs of the people living away from the city.

The noise in call centers can be extremely loud at times, but this just means the center is having success. A quiet call center floor is one that isn't selling. US domestic centers can get extremely loud as well, believe me. To be honest with you, American agents are atleast twice as loud as Filipino agents on any given day. The key is for the agents to use noise dampening headphones, and use the noise the dampening function on their SIP phones. This blocks out a lot of the noise. Some centers choose to go the cheap route on headsets. Happens here in the US as well.

If you are calling homeowners you have to have lists that are cleared for 'do not call" list for one thing....you can not just call homeowners out of the white pages

where I live, telemarketers to homeowners have to have a license about 50 bucks a year, be checked for fraud, financial misconduct etc

You can have telemarketers call people you have a relationship with - like a former client or someone who called or emailed you for info. You need to keep records

Calling biz to biz is much looser and easier - if a business is listed you can call them..
they can ask you not to call and you do need to respect that but you can call them

Not sure but maybe they bend some rules about calling homeowners? You may be the one who gets in trouble if you are the one paying them and directing what they do?

Based on my experience, sound quality over Skype depends on how good their ISP is. Many Filipinos suffer from poor quality internet services, which is why I suggest you ask for a speed test and interview that guy over Skype so that you can personally tell whether the sound quality is good or not

I'm from the Philippines and I talk with consulting clients and venture prospects over Skype all the time. I have to be honest, the infrastructure here is not very good. Your telemarketer will sound very unprofessional when the conversation cuts off or there's that annoying shrieking/skipping sound Skype sometimes makes when the bandwith speed plunges.

Invest in an outbound call center. That measly $750 a month you pay is worth it.

    You get:
    Redundancy
    Topnotch connection
    Superb voice quality
    Centralized standards-driven training
    Motivation training
    Sales training
    Better talent

Ultimately, this leads to BETTER RESULTS. Don't be afraid of investing in your business.
