Demonstrate you understand the concerns, frustrations and problems your prospect has better than all your competitors.

    Can't go wrong there.

As Ewen says get to know their prospects and customers and
think through what's important to them.

You can create a lead generating report, a video, and audio
something like "7 Most Costly Mistakes You Can Make Buying
A Used Car" or "7 Secrets To Choosing The Perfect Kitchen
For You At The Best Price" etc etc.

In most businesses there is key information that prospects
are looking for before they have the confidence to make a
      buying decision.

If you provide them with that key information they're many
times more likely to buy from you...and often they'll do it at
      a premium price.

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

Some businesses will even show that they are a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Ive been thinking for a while now about contacting the local newspapers and offering to write articles on a regular basis on my particular niche.

But im not too sure how best to approach this? Is it just a case of trying to get hold of the right person at the paper? Has anyone else successfully setup a similar kind of deal?

Ive already written over 50 articles on my website offering various tips/advice/how-tos etc so im thinking it might be worth sending them a few of these articles in a couple of emails and then following up with a phone call.

For the OP, sponsor high visibility charities or events, start and/or sponsor relevant/popular MeetUP groups. Do speaking engagements.

Exactly right. Contact the publisher or editor, or the writer most likely to be interested in what you do. Same for local radio or TV. You can also follow them on Twitter and get good results by starting your relationship with them that way.
