Ways to market without breaking the bank. Its all about building relationships and repeat customers.

Restaurants are very cash flow heavy. In that money comes in and it goes right back out. Not alot of wiggle room.

    Twitter
    Facebook
newspaper ads ( depending on demographic)

There are ways to send SMS without paying for texting by using tweeter. Look it up

    good lucks

They are brand new to IM/offline marketing? or brand new to restaurants? If latter, why are you mostly talking to brand new people?

Just google a restaurant before meeting. If there are negative comments about a restaurant propose an owner a reputation management.

Getting them established on Facebook is a good idea. Create a Facebook page for them and try to get as many likes as possible. I know a lot of restaurants give people a discount if they check in to the restaurant with Facebook.

The best marketing a restaurant can do is PR. Local TV, radio, newspaper highlighting the new place or new seasonal dishes on menu etc... something interesting for the media to report on. and it costs them nada. But they'll pay you to get them exposure.

    Restaurants need more customers

    higher value customers

    larger guest check averages

Quick ways of unloading food about to spoil

Quick ways of generating a bump in income from a drink special, food special, theme night etc.

Systems for getting food cooked, onto plates and out to customers efficiently

An easier way to manage their inventory, pars, reordering

An easier way to manage, schedule and train their staff

All those technical things you're talking about are merely means to an end. They don't want those. They want the things above. I've worked in restaurants for 8 years. I mean as a restaurant employee. And I've been consulting with them longer than that.

If a restaurant owner doesn't know their guest check average, RUN.

Many restaurants need a lot of interior improvements to make any marketing we do worth the while. ie better customer service, improved experiences, food, décor, menus, recipes, overall management, suppliers, branding.

Then when they/we got that 'right' then we can make a difference, but you send 100 customers to a restaurant that doesn't have the above right and you're wasting you're time as they wont become repeat customers and you wont be building a successful relationship even though you're doing all the work.

Go eat the restaurant, I don't mean every one but ones you connect with and are looking to start working with, check the experiences out, would you honestly recommend them, if not, Ok you can still work with them but you could end up flogging a dead horse

      This...

How to develop a vision and reputation mindset culture.

The vision ensures you don't just hire the next person looking for a job.

The reputation mindset culture start building the brand and the experience customers have with the brand the moment they make contact with any employees.

shilling22 has it right. They need customers! All of the things you claim they need are tools to get customers in the door, and coming back. Prioritize what tools/services you are effective at as far as their ability to drive customers to the restaurant and offer those.

Keep it simple, the Chinese menu of tons of options will make it harder for a client to decide. Have a great offer you can back up with results.

Almost all of you are still thinking in technical terms...your terms.

Read my post above...those reasons are in the restaurant owners' terms. That's the language they'll listen to.

They don't want a coupon campaign. They want solutions to the problems I listed.

    Jason, you're so right.

It's tough for most offline marketers to do, but we MUST look at it from the restaurant owners perspective.

The things you listed are gold.

I can tell you from experience that you're spot on.

I am sorry BUT....I...Me, Myself and I...can walk into ANY restaurant (carrying the Portable DVD Player I bought from WalMart for $89)....ask the OWNER if he has a "Quick-Minute" to see something....I set my Portable DVD Player down and click "Play" ....and....up comes a 2 minute Video of a video I did for a restaurant.

He watches and I say: "Restaurants spend LOTS of Time and Money on their INTERIORS but....nobody sees the interiors until they are INSIDE! My Videos are a way for potential Diners to SEE....what the Interiors look like and....get an idea of what kind of food you serve"!

Their response is usually, "How Much"?

I respond with; "Nothing! All I'm asking today is your permission to let me take some digital shots! I will then make up a Sample Video and show it to you....at NO Obligation!"

I then take some photos...go back to my office....make a Video (I use PhotoStory3 because of the Pan & Zoom effects)...come back and show it and, he either wants it or he doesn't.

This has worked for me in MANY towns and usually has paid for most of my vacations.

Whoops....I forgot to mention that I also set up a Display at the front desk of local Hotels. This display says; "Looking for a place to eat? Scan here!"....with a picture of a QR Code that brings up a "Restaurant Directory".

There is also a URL address they can type in if they don't have a Smart-Phone.

Yeah... This is pretty much verbatim a WSO Zesh Ali did about 2 years ago, right down to using PhotoStory.

You are going to need to wait more than 2 years if you want to pass other peoples stuff off as your own.

Possible, although Don has been using PhotoStory for a long time.

Restaurants need customers and they need to management tools. Why not offer them both by suggesting them a website to gain visitors to their site while placing a booking form on their for visitors to book their table / menu / reservation!

They specifically need Local SEO (organic and maps) which would include Yelp/Directory optimization, citation creation, help getting reviews and reputation management.

Restaurant search traffic is heavily influenced by local reviews and is more mobile based traffic than many other niches.

Restaurants like any other business's need customers. Most restaurant owners open a restaurant because they like to cook, not because they like to market and run a business. That is the reason so many restaurants fail within the first year.

Show them ways you can drive traffic to their website through facebook or google marketing. You can have the best website and mobile site on the internet but without traffic, who knows about it. Also a lot of people think that they need to go to Groupon of Scoutmob to give their business a boom and which it does, but that is not sustainable because if you are a Scoutmob hunter, you will never go to that business again unless they have a deal going on.

  • Restaurants benefit the most from mobile apps. They love the features for being able to set reservations or even order right from the phone.

Also, restaurant owners love the concept of punch cards but people always used to lose them. Now... They can have their punch cards stored right in their phone or they can have it setup so that customers hae to check in each time their there to activate the punch card.
