$3,800 A MONTH...from Restaurants!

Holy Camoly! There are JILLYUNS of people, in 2013, in desperate need of an
INSTANT
and
CONSTANT
...... source of MONEY....other than a "J.O.B" ....or some kind of ON Line scheme.

I have been ....WAJ......("Without A Job") for MANY moons. Because I sense a SERIOUS NEED for folks to make money, nowadays....i'd like to offer one of the ways I've made money...WHEN I NEEDED IT!

This is MY....FREEBIE to fellow "Warriors"! If you like it....give me a "Thank You" below!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
MOST restaurant owners are interested in ONE Thing....more MONEY!

Now.....there are 2 ways for restaurant owners to get MORE MONEY;

1) Bring in More Diners!
(Which takes Moolah to "entice" people to come in and Spend Money)
or.....
2) Get existing Diners to either;
a) spend more per meal
or
b) come in and dine....MORE OFTEN!

Well....I've been in Sales and Marketing and Promotion for over 30 yrs and....when a GOOD client (he owned 5 restaurants) asked me to give him a way to...."Make More Money".....I told him I'd "Think About It!"

This was Pre-Google. I'm talking 1980's. However....people are people and I've always known that people are interested in ONE THING.... "WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME"!

So....rather than take up more of your time, I will fast forward to 2003, when the Internet was getting going and EMAIL was HOT!

What worked for me, in the PRE-I-Net days was something I called, "FISH-BOWL MARKETING!"

I'd place a large glass FISH BOWL near the cash register with a Sign that said...."REGISTER HERE FOR FREE DINNER!
Drop you business card in the bowl. Drawing held every Friday!"

So....I talked my friend (who owned a restaurant) into letting me place a large fish bowl and sign next to his cash register.

I went back the next Friday and found LOTS of biz cards in the bowl.

My Buddy's wife reached in and pulled out a card.

I posted the winner's name next to the Fish Bowl.....phoned him announcing HE was the winner and....I went on to sell 80 more restaurants on this promo!.....at $95 Per Month!

So.....this can STILL be done! NO software, NO website...etc;
Just a FishBowl and a sign.....to collect $95 a mo!

Anyway.....that's WHO I AM! A "regular guy" who has been able to "pull rabbits out of hats" my whole life...relying on MYSELF, for income, rather than "Da Gummit" or a "JOB".

The reason why I'm posting this now is because one of my "fans" (a single mom with 3 kids).....just phoned me and told me she NOW HAS FORTY (40) Restaurants paying her $95 a Month for her "Fish Bowl" promo.

Now....here's how she has added MORE money to her program. She charges an extra $200/mo to email the restaurant Diners....telling them to...come in and get a "Special X"....or "Come in for a Special Event on "X Day".

So.....there are THOUSANDS of restaurants who'd love to make more money from their EXISTING DINERS!

The "FishBowl next to the cash register" can earn YOU some "serious" coin!

Think about it then....GO OUT AND DO IT!

Don Alm....long-time DOER

      Same here...

Aside that it's a very old strategy most don't like to hear anymore it's very basic marketing which still does work for the locals. Don't think it works for places with 90% tourists or travelers.

But $95 for picking a card and calling the business??

I just can imagine that the deal includes adding all businesses onto a list.

Otherwise it's the most expensive phone call IMO.

Why would the restaurant owner pay you $95/mo for this when they can just put the fish bowl and draw the name themselves?

How does the restaurant get more money from this method?

Exactly. Maybe they are a bit slow over there, but here they would simply do it themselves and save the $95.

        Wow! Lots of "Skepto-Manics" here!

        However....I've been in "DIRECT" (Belly-to-belly) SALES....for YEARS!

The first time I did an AD program that got Diners involved so I could "Collect Info from Diners" for the purpose of contacting them AGAIN....to give them a Reason to Come Back! was with my "Place Mat" program.

I added a "Coupon Form" on the Mats so diners could fill in their Name & Mailing Address to be entered into a weekly drawing for a Free Dinner.

The Forms were dropped into a large Fish Bowl and we had a drawing every Monday....phoned the winner and sent PostCards to all the others with a Photo of a Dollar Bill they could use towards their next meal.

I also did "regular Fish Bowl" drawings where diners dropped their biz card in or they could fill out a card. Again, for the purpose of COLLECTING Names & Addresses for a "MAILING LIST"!

Then....when FAXES came out....I did another "Fish-Bowl" collection where we collected FAX #'s ....for the purpose of building a "Fax List" of diners.

THEN....I phoned local offices asking to speak to the Office Mgr to "Get PERMISSION" (emphasis on "PerMission" for "Legalese Viewers)

I got "Permission" from 20 offices to FAX them "Daily Specials".

Then....I started Charging restaurant and Deli's (especially Delis) to send the Daily Special Faxes to local offices.

AND.....guess what? It is STILL LEGAL....to send Faxes where you have gotten "Permission" to send them....and.....believe it or not....restaurants and Deli's will PAY to have their Daily Specials FAXED to local offices!

And further (for the Skepto-Manics) if you'd Google "FISHBOWL MARKETING" you will discover businesses STILL operating the "Fish-Bowl" program....collecting Contact Info from diners for the purpose of COTACTING THEM to "Bring Them Back"!

Also....WillR has a terrific WSO that involves placing SIGNS in restaurants. These Signs offer "10% OFF their Bill" when they SCAN THE QR CODE!

Then....guess what the participating restaurant does with the emails they've collected? You got it! They send out EMAILS to their diners, offering "Reasons Why" they should Return!

Some people are also collecting TEXT #s to get diners into a SMS program! WHY? To get diners to RETURN!

Thus....the "Old" Fish-Bowl STILL WORKS! So does the "FAX" thingee.

I work with local business owners and they WANT people to do this FOR THEM, most don't have a freaking clue about marketing and are still using the phone book. $295 is inexpensive to them, they're use to paying much more for inferior advertising.

I will be working this in ASAP into my marketing plans.

      Strong 1st post, hmm....

So they need someone to put a fishbowl out front and pick out a card? I don't think anyone in their right mind would pay anyone do that.

    Thanks for the post, Don.

You've got me thinking. There's a connection between
what you've presented here, and the old lunch fax program
along with something I'm currently doing.

    Should be very profitable.

Thanks for getting the wheels turning.

I am with the others. I don't get why they pay you $95 to draw a name from a bowl and call the person on it.

And I also don't see how this increases business for a restaurant. It just gives away a free meal once a month.

Either I accidentally skipped a paragraph or something was left out...

A very dated concept that has limited effect these days. Bordering on tacky imho. Patrons are more reluctant than ever to drop their card off liberally now for fear of getting subscribed to junk mail. In addition, the free meal just isn't that much of a "prize" for a typical business patron either.

A more updated and effective approach to this would be encouraging FaceBook likes, and offering your clients special promotions via social media. Get servers to encourage this on a personal level right at the table too - much more effective. This encourages social sharing amongst fans of the restaurant, a platform for announcements and promotions, and flexibility to offer other marketing techniques such as FB advertising and email promotions for those choosing to sign up.

It's certainly possible to take the concept and modernize it, but one thing to keep in mind is that even though this "fishbowl" technique may have been used with some success in decades past, marketing technology is advancing extremely fast, and offering something like this to your clients may actually make you look more like a amateur than a professional.

This kind of stuff isn't even relevant to this section of the forums if you ask me.

Business cards in a fish bowl does not equate to legally being able to send them an unsolicited email and in today's world that is a HUGE no no!

All it takes is a couple of complaints and the hosting company is going to black list the businesses domain. Big risk zero reward.

Honestly I have never figured out what the point of the fish bowl is. I have never been contacted in any way by the companies I have dropped my card in.

There are better and more legal ways to build a list.

Now to make this work very well and legally here is what I would do.

    1. Get a better first prize. Free meal just isn't exciting anymore.
    2. Call everyone else and tell them they won the 2nd (or 3rd, etc) prize.
    3. Prize everyone gets is discount card good for 10% (or 20%, etc) off every time they visit good till (insert date).

These same cards you could have the restaurant sell for like $10, $20, or even $50 a year.

Also give these card out to the 1st (and other prize levels). The people who drop their card in the bowl are likely loyal to semi loyal customers. This is a great way to get them eating at the restaurant more often.

I think a better prize would be to take the winner's card and enlarge it to a size that can be framed and mounted on their wall somewhere everyone would see.

I hate to break it to you doubters but my local Bahama Breeze (owned by Darden Restaurants (NYSE: DRI), the nation’s largest casual dining restaurant company) located in upper scaled suburb in Alpharetta, Georgia has a tacky fishbowl on their counter right now.

Btw, they've had this fishbowl up for years as does many restaurants in the area.

So it must not be so dated or wack after all.

            Hi Rus,

You're absolutely right, I don't know if it's doing something for them. The point I'm trying to make is the method is actually being used by some and Midasman's share shouldn't be totally discounted because it appears to be dated because it's a plain old fishbowl.

It was just an idea. If someone wants to take and run with it...so be it. They certainly wouldn't be losing much by actually putting the method into action. We know most folks don't do much of anything, when everything can work to some degree if one works it.

Even faith without works is dead.

                  That was my take

I guess this sounds like a great pitch if you put a QR code at the place of the fishbowl which leads to a FB page where they have to enter their email and give a LIKE to participate in the weekly free meal giveaway.

I haven't done that but the mechanics should work and looks more like 2013.

          Aaron, that's an interesting observation.

Why on earth do people bother to post negative comments
for an idea that they don't like?

Why not just move on to another thread or forum that you do like?
You can contribute there and it's a better use of your time.

The reality of it is...it doesn't matter what you don't like.
The only thing that matters is what people will buy - and why.

Yup....Keep It Simple! and..."why try and invent a new wheel"?....use stuff that's been proven to work!

When my wifee had a retail Antique Shoppe she had me watch the shop while she went to an auction. Siting at her counter in the back of the shop I noticed that everyone entering would "Go Right".....look at the items and leave.

I said to myself; "Self! Is there a way to get shoppers INTERESTED in our Stuff....HIGHLY interested? and, WHAT would cause these people to LOOK SERIOUSLY at our stuff?

Then...I got one f my "Hot Flashes".

I thought; "What If I gave every person entering....a DISCOUNT COUPON they could use towards the PURCHASE of anything in the shop!

So....I went home that night and printed up some "Dollar-Sized" Coupons I called "BROWSER BUCKS". These were "Good For $1 Off The Purchase of Anything in the Shop!"

So....next day, the first couple in the door at 10.01am ....I walked up to, welcomed them to our shop and HANDED THEM one of my "Browsers Bucks".

NOW....instead of the couple just meandering along, taking cursory glances at our stuff....the female was holding my Browser Buck in her right hand and....LOOKING INTENTLY at each item! Probably wondering WHAT could she use this FREE DOLLAR on!

Well....this first couple came up to the counter and handed me a piece of "Vaseline Glass"....with a pricetag of $147. (Vaseline Glass had a color caused by mixing GOLD in the glass. Gold is what gave it that "Vaseline" color) The female said; "I'd like to buy this AND...can I also use the Browser Buck?"

            Obviously I agreed.

So....by the end of the day, I had sold TEN TIMES the items we normally sold and....it was our biggest grossing days in 15yrs!

And....a "side benefit" was....because I was ALREADY offering a Discount .....THEY DIDN'T ASK FOR ADDITIONAL DISCOUNTS! Maybe they didn't want to appear....Greedy!

The "usuall thing" to do, when buying Antiques, was to try and get something OFF....get a Better Price! The "request for a Better Price" disappeared!

Can you see the Psychology here?

So.....this is not an "Electronic Age" type of Marketing Program BUT, it is STILL WORKING in the Antique Shops I sold this program to....in the year 2013!

AND.....one other "Old-Tyme" promotion thing I used was.... "BEE-BACK" Cards.

With each purchase I handed the buyer a Business Card sized card with a graphic of a black and yellow.... BEE. This Card was worth 10% Off any item when they returned.

My Antique Shop buyers are STILL using this promo also....in the year 2013!

            So...."Fish-Bowls", Business Cards, Coupons...etc....my be Old-Hat BUT....they still work!

I can't see why it's hard for anyone to see why this can't work.

Some people would rather pay someone else to do many things for them.

Heck, isn't that why most people are in that restaurant to begin with? It's to pay someone else to do their cooking for them!

I still see shoeshine stands that people use and pay someone else to clean and polish their shoes.

I've read a bunch of different, not used as much, marketing tactics from Don that can be used effectively especially if you have that certain kind of likeable charisma.

    Keep those methods coming!

I "learned" LOONG Ago (I was one of the first to pay Allen $39 to be a "founding member" when he first started this) After I kept seeing "Non-Direct Sales" people joining in....I lost interest and dropped out!

Then...back in 2009....I figured, "Hey! Maybe I can provide some "Insight" or "Motivation" or "Possibility Thinking" to the NON Direct-Sales gang here.

      So....everytime I bring up a program or project that has worked for me or worked for someone I taught....with my Intention of providing a "Light-Bulb To Flash in one or 2 viewers".....I get the;

"Hey! Dis guy is jus' tellin' "stories"!
      or...
"Hey! Dis won't work....da biz owners can jus' do it demselves!"
      or...
"Hey! People won't pay dis fer dis!"

I EXPECT this kind of reaction (and worse)...because I KNOW that most viewers here have NOT been in the "Real" world!

So.....as US "experienced" Belly-To-Belly kinda guys continue to be interested in "New Promotion" ideas for Small Biz .....and....GO OUT AnD GIVE THEM A WHIRL.....we find that SOME OF THEM WORK!

For example; WillR's recent WSO about posting signs with QR Codes in eating places....enticing diners to SCAN the Code for an INSTANT 10 % DISCOUNT OFF THEIR BILL!

WOW! This was GENIUS! And....by offering an initial FREE Trial.....then, coming back and SHOWING the biz owner the HUGE LIST the program has collected....HOLY CAMOLY!....any biz owner who'd reject a program that can BRING HIS DINERS BACK!....is either a Fool or someone who does NOT care about his biz!

Ohh....I forgot, those of you who think "Collecting Emails" and "Sending UN-SOLICITED EMAILS" is Verbotten.....better stay in your present "j.o.b." or....go down to the nearest "KELLY" office and apply for a Part-Time job because YOU are a "Fault-Finder" and NOT a "possibility thinker!"

Don Alm.....STILL looking at and finding..... "possibilities"!

BEAM me Up, Scottie! Signs of "entroopeneerial Life" here is dissipating!

I really have to wonder if all the guys saying this cannot work have
Learned how to read. Did he not say in the first post that
a lady contacted him who has 40 restaurants paying her for this?
Now maybe it's "tacky" or not hip but I will certainly take
4K a month even if I have to be "uncool"

It's pretty rare that I feel I have much to add to discussions here but after reading this thread I thought some of you might like to read how I use a similar strategy to this for my clients.

Although we're using this in different industries, I'll use restaurants as the example as I lay it out.

When a diner visits the restaurant they are given a chance to enter a giveaway for a prize draw. You could give them a card with the details to take away or have a tablet/iPad in your business so they can do it there and then.

The link is to a facebook tab that is a fangate, i.e. they have to like the facebook page to see the giveaway details. Once the page is liked they enter their name and email address for the giveaway prize. Included in the rules for this giveaway is letting them know that by entering they are agreeing to receive promotional offers from the business. This is done using a webhook which adds them to an email list through the likes of Mailchimp.
So the restaurant is building their Facebook page with targeted likes and building an email list.

For more promotion, we also take the email addresses, import them into facebook and use their advertising specifically through the news feed as a post. It's another way to reach some of your mailing list and with the intention that if they like, comment or share about the post that it gets seen by some of their friends. This brings the possibility of new diners coming to the restaurant.

Even more promotion can be done advertising the facebook post to promote the giveaway to people in the restaurants local area.

I've missed out some detail to keep it simple but happy to answer questions.

          Hi Marty,

I use shortstack.com to run the giveaways. When you set it up you can choose which content is shown to fans and which to non-fans. So only the fans get the option to see the page where they enter their email. Shortstack also offer the option to integrate with autoresponders. There are some there ready like Mailchimp and for others like Aweber you choose the webhook option and include the webhook that connects the two together.

          I hope that helps.

Now I realize the fish bowl technique isn't high tech or shiny enough for some of you but never mock the simple.

I realize it's not Facebook approved but the simple still attracts HUNGRY INDIVIDUALS that like to TAKE CHANCES on WINNING SOMETHING which ALWAYS brings in the CASH!

And the last time I checked you can't deposit "Likes" at Bank of America.

What you critics see is an over sized, in the way glass bowl filled with business cards. I see gold swimming around in that fish bowl that the restaurant owner is about to use to crush his competition and they wouldn't know how he does it.

I won't mention how the fish bowl would be responsible for "Guppy, Bass & Whale" continuity programs, affinity programs along with joint venture events.

But hey it's just some simple fish bowl and it couldn't possibly double or triple the restaurant owners sales.

      Rrrriiigggghhhtttt!!!

I think there are some really great ideas here:

I work with several restaurants here in San Diego, I had them put a iPad at front counter and you LIKE their Facebook and Twitter Pages, they you get instant discount on your meal. Boom....
    Fishbowls....so 2000's....

I guess this sounds like a great pitch if you put a QR code at the place of the fishbowl which leads to a FB page where they have to enter their email and give a LIKE to participate in the weekly free meal giveaway.

Why do we only look at restaurants? There are other business that could use these ideas in this "economy."

I would pay for the first month and then take action into my own hands. It is a brilliant idea and can use some tweaking, but other than that it has expanded my mind for greater measures.
