This may be a dumb question, but then I am dumb when it comes to anything technical

WP themes are often said to be aimed at certain industries/niches, well I never really understand that, I mean a theme can be said to be made for the real estate industry, yet you look at it and its the content that is real estate biased, the look design usability of the theme isn't always industry biased and in any case I understood WP is so flexible that many theme can be altered to suit your needs even without too much technical knowledge.

So why is it then if you search for 'industry' in the WP theme sites, you will get supposed industry specific (and I know they might not to be totally specific) themes.

Is it genuine or more so targeted marketing

Usually the site comes with graphics for that niche or industry: vets comes with dogs/cats etc. Dentist with pics of dentists etc...

Also the theme may have a few features that are specific to the niche: hotels might get a booking form with a diary, same for driving instructors.

But you are right some are just targeted in the marketing and are not really niche exclusive, you can always change the images and use it in the niche you are currently selling to.

Colours can sometimes play a big part, male/female colours can be a real influencer in certain sectors so think about that too.

What the above poster said is correct. Add a few niche specific graphics/some special functionality and you are good to go.

The problem you run into is those types of themes can be limiting.

To me, a better way to go is find a theme that can be customized for looks, then look to finding specifics plugins that do what you need. Premium plugins are big right now and you can find one that will do just what you need for any situation.

The 2 things I have been doing is using a few themes that I have (broad functionality) and creating custom themes with software, either create simple graphics (which I can do) or have them made.

From there I have my library of the best plugins (mostly paid) that will cover everything I offer. So far it's worked very well, and I consider the plugins to be what makes the difference.

    Hope that helps.

The "categorized" WP Themes could have graphics relating to the industry. If they're not its just another way to market a premium theme

Some designers just use the same body and change headers and footers. That can work, for cheaper sites, we designed our own wireframe and took it a step further. It works extremely well. We can give the client "off the shelf" but make it look bespoke.

Frameworks are good for that but can be expensive and unless you are really churning out the sites it might not be worth it.
