The dollar grabber is a good one. There's tons that are perfect for grabbing serious attention and especially the attention of the big dogs. I"ve used bank deposit bags and other things for lumpy mail or grabbers with profitable results for myself and clients.

You want to stand out and obviously tie whatever you sent the letter in to the letter. Don't just staple a dollar to the letter or throw it in a ball and then pitch. You have to tie it all together.

    The Old Intro..

As you can see I've attached x to this letter. Why? 2 reasons...

Then go on to name the 2 reasons which tie back to them and the grabber.

Here's a bonus tip that tons of people drop the ball on...

It doesn't matter what you staple to or add to the letter if it doesn't get opened so if not doing a outside grabber and mailing it in a plain white envelope, then you want it to look personal, 1st class stamp (not bulk), appear handwritten and etc...

I'm going to hope that wasn't sarcastic. This forum doesn't replace Google.
The letter you are talking about is the Gary Halbert "Dollar Bill Letter"
        You can find it here:https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...55123115,d.b2I

For mailing... you will need to test.
I would suggest going to your local FedEx office and grabbing some envelopes.
Put your letter in them and take them to the post office to mail them. It's cheaper.
You can test against lumpy mail in a FedEx envelope.
Also test a regular envelope vs a lumpy envelope.

Yeah I totally agree, you have to make sure they OPEN it and that's why it's important to go for 1st class, nice envelops, I even stamp it with "You're Probably Too Late" - to get their attention.

See it's much more than just grabbing their attention. From that point on, they know YOU know how to market. And that puts the ball in your court. Direct mail is a PAIN... But it is definitely worth the effort.

If you, are going to use such a tactic, then choose a niche/market that pays well or is worth a good amount of money. Make sure, that your letter gets read as well, or you'll be wasting lots of money.

Such a tactic, can work well in the financial market.

We did a project for a non profit that help horses that were mistreated, and we inserted the letter and a dollar bill in a #10 window envelope. We made sure the dollar showed through the window, and then put the address on the outside of the envelope next to the window. The non profit said it was one of there best donor mailers they have ever done, and we are doing it again this year.

Yeah, I would make sure that the dollar is showing somehow. I gt a letter from a bank with $2 inside. They didn't mention the $2 anywhere. And it was a letter I easily would have thrown out.

Just because there is a dollar inside, doesn't affect the open rate...unless they know there is a dollar inside. Me? I'd buy a dollar stuffer and mail it bulky mail.

        The "dollar" attached letter was one of Gary Halbert's promos. However, another of Gary's promos was;

        "FREE RECORDED MESSAGE REVEALS......!"

Plus.....other "Grabbers" like on the PostCard below.

When I used those words on PostCards and sent them to biz owners, I got HUGE response. I used a Voice Mail service that provided me with a 2 min outgoing message where I gave reasons why callers should leave their Name & Mailing Address to get more info.

        Hi there,

        Not so :-)

I give to a local charity and have done for years. Yesterday, they sent me a HUGE envelope, probably 0.5m x 0.5m- it was massive, which had glossy printed photos on the outside and a lumpy gift inside.

I threw it straight into the rubbish based on my thinking, "So this is where my pennies are being spent". I won't contribute to charities who blatantly squander my donations.

Now, that is an odd situation. Claude is right for the most part, so long as your message and media matches your market.

My company uses bulky mail all the time. We ordered 8-ball pool balls from China to put in mailers last year. It was expensive to mail but the campaign was a huge success.

Oriental trading is a great source for cheap items you can buy in bulk and they even produce catalogues geared towards each season so your grabber/lump can be themed to the time of year.

It takes more effort to do lumpy mail, but the ROI is incredible (and even more incredible if you employ a pre and post mailer campaign).

        All the best,

        Sasha.

          Sasha;

Are you insinuating, for one minute, that something I said may not be 100% true in every instance?

Certainly not. I was simply looking for a reason to vent, truth be told. Lumpy mail has made my company millions, and I'm proud to have been a part of a portion of that. You are correct in your assertion that everyone opens lumpy mail. Just not always those that send it. :-)

I think the easy to over come challenge here is to position lumpy mail apart from typical "professional" marketing material. I am like you- any time I receive marketing materials that look exactly like "they are supposed to look", my attention span is limited.

    I absolutely love Lumpy Mail.

Ever since I ran into Jon Goldman, I've used it since.

I almost always get a double digit response rate (well, sometimes).

In fact, I got a 47% response rate from mailing a ski mask in giant zip-lock baggy.

It took me 2 weeks of procrastination before I finally mailed it... You should have seen the look on the faces the employees had when I walked in my local post office... PRICELESS
