Advice On Claude's Book Cover Needed

Hey Claude,

Personally I like "Highly Profitable Prospecting" better than the 2nd one.

I don't think you'd run into troubles, but I'm also not an attorney.

Shit, there are so many book titles I've seen that are one word off, unless they had a series of these books and were going to use that name, I don't see the trouble.

If they're not using it, and haven't trademarked it, I don't see why it would stop you from using it. But again, I ain't a lawyer...

By the way, do you use Adwords? you could always try the "Tim Ferriss" method of using adwords to find the best title... choosing the one with the best CTR.

Or you could use a sub-head and start off before the title with

"Learn To Sell Like A Pro...

My book One Call Closing is done. I'm just waiting for a Proof copy from Amazon for a final read through and approval.

The book on prospecting is a completely different book, and much more complicated to write.

I suppose I could call the book One Call Prospecting, but it wouldn't give the right meaning of what the book is about.

That idea sounds like a good start/finish if you are trying to brand yourself in the marketplace. Maybe as a super or sub title for a set of books.

I think you are on the right target with this. But you just need to tweak it a bit. That way the two books tie together.

This is cool "You Can Close In One Call", if you can tweak it, make addition then you will be able to make a catchy title that stings.

Get rid of the "discovery and how to find" cos it sucks.

"Discovery and how to find profitable" whatever has been used several times and doesn't cut it anymore to me. It only makes your book look like those junks out there.

Reminds me of my very first business which had to do with selling and installing Burglar Alarms and Security Systems. So, when it came time to form a Corp.....I called it;

Sorry to be a downer, but I have a different view on this one. Perhaps it's because I worked in the medical profession for years, but when I first read the word Prospectology, the first thing that came to mind was Proctology. Yikes!

Proctology: a branch of medicine dealing with the structure and diseases of the anus, rectum, and sigmoid colon

I can't say that others in the medical field would have that same word association but if it were me, I just wouldn't chance it, personally.

Again, I'm sorry if I'm being anal, but it evoked strong negative emotions for me.

Again; I agree. I think the title is forming. I like the "One Call" branding idea.

The Whitacre Method. I just have to use it. But this may not be the book for it.

I'm planning a series. I may have someone write it about my selling approach. Like The Feldman Method was written by someone besides Ben Feldman.

IMHO anything that you can trademark such as "Prospectology" is great. I'm a "feel" guy and that title just feels great. Prospectology is not a word sales guys hear often.

Often times the ephemerality in Don Alms posts amuse me, but he hit the nail on all sorts of heads here.

I'm not going to try to think of a title just now, but I will tell you which of those two subtitles I like best -- and it's the first one.

The idea of "discovering" is alluring. It sounds fun and easy.

But "How to Find" sounds like work.

People buy easy.

PS - Just don't use Riffling for a title. I hear Dan has trademarked it. (Inside joke, folks.)

Jeesh. The more I write, the more it doesn't sound like a book, and more like a three day seminar.

But I promised myself that I'd have a book out every three months.
With the new Scrivener software, I think I can pop one out every month or two.

A few of the titles given here I love. I sure am trying to talk myself into Prospectology. But some of the titles are very attractive from a copywriting standpoint...and where I'll probably end up.

You guys are a big help. I really consider this a big favor.

Added after Ewen posted. Wow. Personally it doesn't resonate with me. But it sure has good reasoning behind it. I get the cadence and sounds of the letters. I may have to write another book. The title is specific enough for that.

Hey Claude, If you resonate with those particular words and a similar title has already been taken, you could consider keeping the words: High Probability Prospecting (and add something of value the prospect/ something they will achieve etc) like: High Probability Prospecting In Your Marketplace or High Probability Prospecting That Closes or High Probability Prospecting For Newbies/Amateurs/Professionals/ For The Hungry Marketer etc.

3 The sub-headline starts with a c because it and k are sticky letters,

4 Good is used because they only want the good prospects

5 Builds on the 4th, it tells them they don't get the bad.

6 Easy for the brain filter to take in by using contrast
and short words.

7 It's something that can be easily passed on to others.

  Edited to add: Sorry Ewen, I should have at least given you a reason the subtitle doesn't appeal to me and give you a chance to rebut. It's mostly the "ditch the duds" part I don't like. Ditching the duds reminds me of a high school game kids play. They make an unpopular kid think he's going to be invited to something cool, and he feels "in" for maybe the first time, only to find he's been ditched. He might wait and wait for them to show up, or they'd actually meet and trick the sap into doing something he shouldn't and they disappear, leaving him holding the bag.
  
  Anyway, "ditching" someone, at least to me, isn't a good connotation, but maybe it would be for a different personality type.

Hey Claude,

One more thought that you (and others) might find useful. Try entering your primary keywords one at a time into Google and look at the headlines that appear at the top of the sponsored ads. These are not only the highest ranking ads, they're also the ads that have received the most clicks.

Just to clarify, for anyone that hasn't used Google Adwords before, unlike most pay per click networks, Adwords uses popularity (number of clicks) to determine the rank of an ad. By doing this it prevents someone from simply going in and buying the top spot for a profitable keyword.

What it means is that an ad where the individual or company is only paying .50 can easily outrank an ad that's paying a much higher amount. Most of the time this has been achieved by multiple split testing of their headline until their click through ratio was very high and their "control" ad is performing extremely well.

Doing this not only increases their clicks, it also keeps their ad costs down and profits up!

I used to use this method back when I was writing a ton of articles. Someone else pointed it out to me and it made sense because the headlines on those ads are PROVEN to get a high click through rate.

It's a great way of leveraging someone elses work. If you want to see all of the ads a particular site is running you can usually just refresh your page once or twice and if they're split testing, like they should be, you'll be able to check both ads. You can even write them down and come back in a week or so to see which ad they've changed. That way you'll know for sure which one is their "control" and is receiving the most clicks.

It works great and leaves little room for doubt about an ads effectiveness.

Something else just popped into my head too. You may know about these but I'll share anyway. Check the front pages of magazines as you checkout at the grocery store for eye catching headlines. Mags like "Star" and "The National Enquirer" have high paid copywriters on their payroll and their headlines work! Store owners know it too because they place those at the checkout above all others.

Anyway, thought I'd throw that in for future reference. Hope it helps.

I'm not sure where the confusion is.
The book is on how to find the best prospects to make an appointment with, and then how to make the appointment (usually over the phone).

Cold calling will be one of the methods, but not the most profitable.
Meaning cold calling huge lists to sort out the qualified prospects. I've done it, but there are easier ways to find "already qualified leads". I'll be concentrating on them.

And Qualified doesn't always mean "Predisposed to buy from you", which is the purpose of the book.

"The Insider's Ultimate Guide To Closing That Sale Today, And Increasing Your Sales By 200-500%"

The title is set. But the subtitle could use some work maybe.

I keep wanting to say "The One Call Closer's Ultimate Guide To Closing That Sale In One Call". But it sounds redundant.

Any ideas? I know it's asking a lot.

Claude, whatever the book title you use, here's
a guide for the sub title.

"These strategies inside must (name most desired outcome)
fast or you'll pay nothing."

Have your photo and signature to add conviction.

This is a very clear and easy to understand
offer being made.

"In exchange for your money, you get X
or you pay nothing."

An example with a physical product...

"Corns Gone In 5 Days Or You Pay Nothing"

That tiny ad has been running for about 50 years.

I know this has never been done with books,
but it certainly been done with selling other things.

Breakthroughs come from using proven strategies in one area and
transferring them into another where they aren't used.

Time to break out of the ordinary Claudius!

I "think" that this would be the most effective title, but that's just me. Personally, I'd set up a PPC campaign and test 2 ads against each other. You'd have a much better idea of what gets the most clicks (and what doesn't) by spending a couple hundred bucks.

Testing will leave no doubt and would be well worth the investment. Let the market tell you.

Joe; Of course, testing on PPC campaign is the smartest way. And for most Titles, that's what I've done (my last two book titles.)

But this one (and the next one on prospecting), I was more interested in a clear picture of what the book was about.
As I go, I'll use PPC to test subjects and sub-headlines.

I showed a list of titles to a group of salespeople friends. It was the clear winner, as I thought it might be. Aaron's more lengthy title was a pretty close second. But The shorter title is more in line with the theme I'm looking for, with the rest of the forthcoming titles.

But I did use nearly all of Aaron's ideas in the book description. And my website will incorporate many of the ideas given here. And Ewen's last post is also going to be incorporated on the website.

Point taken. I used a simple photo of 2 male hands shaking. I may go back to that, and show a comparison. But my IT guy is getting approval of the content now. I may post the other cover. Thanks.

Yeah I was wondering if it was too much but some on the back cover works. Amazon should show back covers for Kindle books never realized till right now how much space they lose us.

Personally, I can't stand those 3D doughboys. A lot of marketers know they are PLR, and that cheapens the cover to me. Even if the one you chose for the cover isn't from one of the PLR collections, it looks like it is so you get the same effect.

Personally, I like the third photo because it look like your reaching to do some "prospectology".

(I make the proctology connection each time I read that word.)

Kidding aside, I like the third photo because you're not wearing a tie and to me things are more business casual and relaxed these days. Also, it subtly implies that you have just completed a deal and are reaching to shake the new client's hand.

Notice how many experts have their own photo on the cover. With your publishing volume, you may want to consider putting your own photo on each book's cover, similar to Antony Robbins

For you there is sort of a Dave Thomas quality that is appealing. Meaning, you are friendly and approachable, and offer a high-quality product.

You are a real businessman with a real store in the midwest, I would start to market YOU more than each individual book title, and use your image as the brand connection on each title.

And really start to get publicity on your personal story. Maximize it in all your marketing. Show pictures of the early days of the shop, or even selling door to door.

If you tweak your core story right, you can start to garner speaking fees in the 20K plus range, unless you already are at that level. In other words, you are a true American success story, and could be at the level of well-known speakers and personal brands.

I agree with those that said to get rid of the cartoons.

The image I have in my head for this would have to be taken but here it goes.
I would have a POV image of a man signing a contract with you across the table from them.

Contract in foreground with hand over it signing. (catch it mid signature)
You on other side of table (play with a few poses for yourself to see which looks best).
Set up camera to capture whole event then photoshop everything else on it.

I know it's more work but I think it would make for a powerful image and hit the whole point of you on the cover.

Alternative to that would be you on the cover and a second image at bottom of cover like an illustration of someone signing the contract. In this case make the signing of the contract more simplistic (see the cover of 4 Hour Work Week for the kind of illustration I mean).

Basically turn something like this (below) into a simple representation like the hammock & trees on 4HWW.

as Dan Kennedy has done over the years with his NO B.S. book titles.

I like the idea of putting yourself on the cover. It's bold, and shows supreme confidence. Of the pics you posted, I like this one:

You're holding your head up high, the expression is honest, the open hand is like you're reaching out to shake the readers' hand, and the suit sans the tie looks like you've put in an honest day's work and are ready to relax -- symbolizing (perhaps) that the hard work of figuring out how to close a sale in one call is finished and you're saying "Here, let me show you how it's done."

Now that's a good looking cover! I like it all . . . except just one little thing.

It looks like "beveled edge" lettering on the title and your name. That's really an oldish web design style. It hasn't been done much on books to my knowledge, and looks out of place and old-fashioned to me. In my (goofy) opinion, a more modern look would be more appropriate.

I was going to open Photoshop and show you what I mean, but then I noticed how late it is. Time for bed.

Yeah, I would go with something else for the yellow font at the top. It needs something...because it's a very long title and then subtitle.

Not sure, but I'm thinking "The One Call Closer" would be good as a series brand.

So you would have "The One Call Closer" separately distinguished, with different color, maybe a background...like a header for the brand. And use a more modern style rather than beveled.

Maybe you should run a design contest on Design Crowd, but keep the photo of yourself and general colors of the photo for the backdrop. That part looks decent and inviting.

Edited: And by branding, I mean positioning yourself as The One Call Closer guy/author, and your books as a series from that. Makes you unique in readers' minds instead of just 'another salesman writing a book about selling.'

The titles are fixed. They are there for branding purposes. The subtitle will be tested. I haven't done it yet. The beauty of Createspace, is that I can change anything at any time.

My subtitles are written more for clarity than for response. But I will be doing some testing.

Ok, here's the deal. I got another suggestion from another Warrior here.

But I'm keeping the beveled edge. Believe me, it looks much better on the Paperback cover. But.....

This was a huge improvement that looks in line with the newer so called flat design graphics. Brian's creation is a very nice and simple, fresh minimalist look.

Recently read about how website designs and logos, etc are/have moved in that direction: Basic Principles of Flat Design - And Resources to Get You Started!

thank god you saved Claude from that beveled 1997 text Brian.

I didn't look at the PSD but if it's still in layers he might have a problem if his designer doesn't have helvetica neue, it will substitute it for arial or whatever is close.
