Adding MY Time to my marketing plan netted me 100k+

As marketers we are often trying to get new clients.
Indeed many of the questions on this forum are about how to get new clients.
We often hear suggestions that revolve around a marketing plan and marketing budget.
Things like:
  • ppc
  • seo
  • cold calling
  • direct mail
Since our work is intellectual, our greatest asset and generally what we run out of most quickly is our time. For years I watched the most successful people in their field give away their time teaching what they know via articles and posts and yet I did not bother to apply it to my business because I could not see how it could translate to a dollar in hand .

Well, after doing this for 15 years I can tell you that the best return on investment I receive is from taking time to share what I know. It is part of my plan to spend X amount of hours each week sharing my knowledge so that others can judge for themselves if I am a genius, total nut-bar, or something in between.

Here is one specific example of how I profited

Once upon a time Google started delivering that unnatural links penalty. Within hours, the forums exploded with everybody in a panic. They were asking how to fix it and if they should submit a reconsideration request.
I viewed that as an opportunity to share my knowledge while getting in front of my target market. I did up a new post and video on my site giving my opinion.

Within 24 hours of my post I was contacted by a UK dentist interested in hearing more about what I thought was the best way to proceed. From that email I sold an initial service and then became his virtual internet marketing director. This was a 2k per month gig. It was barely 3 months before he was so pleased with what I was doing he started sending me referrals. When the dust had settled I was handling his business and 4 referrals he sent my way.

Do that math. 5 dentists at 2k/month each, long term clients, all from taking the time to put up one quick video and page that was not even selling anything!

I am certainly not the first to do this. Many of the skilled warriors that post on here all the time are using this exact strategy but I wish it had clicked for me sooner! I hope it will cause a few fellow warriors to do the same even when they think they are just too busy to do it. The returns can be mind blowing.

    Hey Peter

Great post and very inspiring. I totally agree with your philosophy and I wish I could do more of this....the problem is getting in front of them, or them seeing our content (posts/videos).

So I'm clear, are you saying that we should spend more time putting up content on our sites in the hope the post or video would be found by somebody needing the information?

    Thanks
    Phil

Hi Phil, at the most basic level I am saying if you have an idea share it because most often the profits come from the sharing.

Having said that I am a big fan of doing up quick youtube vids that are well titled and a quick blog post that is also well titled and embedding that video on the blog post.

There are two really important things to keep in mind.
      1. Google likes new so even if there is a ton of competition for something you can often get a bit of quick exposure.
      2. When targeting the ideal client in a non salesy way (is salesy a word?) you do not need a ton of traffic.

Of course my business model is not about turn and burn.
I am more than happy with 10 great clients paying 2 to 5k/month.
This allows me to deliver a great service and I have other businesses that bring in funds such as CPA etc..

I could leave serving clients altogether and just work my own projects but its something I enjoy too much to walk away from and it keeps me sharp.

Great post! Greed and knowledge do not mix well together. If you hoard all your knowledge and cant / wont share it, its about useless. Sharing knowledge for me, is the opening of a door that allows you to educate others, and apply the knowledge you have shared. And for US the applying usually means we get paid! hahaha

'Hoping' they would see it is not a strategy - but having a website with loads of info helps, when you are meeting the prospect, it also helps with refferals, as they have easy way to direct people to you - they just point them to article or ebook etc and the bread crumbs will lead them to you.
