Buying Bulk Emails and Blast Emails

Hey Everyone,

Have you ever bought bulk email lists and/or paid a company to email on your behalf to their lists?

Just wanted to see if anyone had done this and what the results were that you got from it.

I am think about doing this for real estate agents. Lists run anywhere from $150 for a state list and $.01 per email sent. To as much as a couple grand for the entire US plus $.01 per email sent.

Buying a list will end up causing your domain, and IP to be blacklisted. If you have someone else do it with a bought list, then they're either up to something sketchy or they aren't aware you bought the list.

Not a good idea... email marketing cold prospects is very hard to figure out. Deliverability is the biggest issue, and any good platform will suspend you after your first send unless you truly know what you're doing. I know what I'm doing after 20+ account suspensions, 50+ domains being blacklisted, and STILL I have problems every now and then.

So, even if the provider of the email list does the mailing you can still get your domain blacklisted?

Yes, but that isn't the big issue you're facing. You can easily get similar domain names to send from, but the problem is when list providers offer to mail for you, you have insanely low deliverability. I'm talking like less than 50% delivered and an overall open rate of around 3-5% on the high end. Think about it, if people are using them to spam, how great could their servers be?

My recommendation... start small, use an email service provider like icontact or contactology, but scrub the aol.com yahoo.com etc. that have a feedback loop.

I'm the Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Contactology. While we normally like being mentioned in forums I want to save anyone reading some time by letting them know that rented or purchased lists are strictly against our Terms of Service. All customers go through a new client verification process which happens after you upgrade. If you rent or purchase your lists or are in any way involved in "solo advertising" your account will be terminated and no refunds provided.

As long as the company renting their list (mailing on your behalf) is sending the email from their domain your domain should be fine. If they send the email from you@yourdomain.com avoid them like the plague.

You'll want to consider how you prevent them from emailing someone who has already unsubscribed from your own list otherwise you could be violating CANSPAM laws.

If you buy a list, whatever you do, don't import it into your own autoresonder (email marketing service). Set up a second service (if you can find one that allows purchased list) even one SPAM TRAP in the purchased list can kill your deliverability.

Much better buying an SMS list in my opinion open rates are unbeatable - and depending on the age and opt-in location you can get the price per record pretty low.

Purchased email lists are not much effective its like solo ads because you really don't know your potential audience build list even you have to spend money and it will eventually benefit you for a very long long time.......... Purchased list also have some other complex problems like inactive addresses.....full in boxes and the most importantly your ips and domains can get blacklisted which will decrease your email deliver-ability.

Purchased leads tend to be way over used and hence not very responsive.

In addition to all of the above and potential CANSPAM violations,
I don't see how real estate agents would benefit from unqualified
    and untargeted emails.

And, as with any other highly regulated industry, it might get the
individual real estate agents in trouble with their governing bodies.

Yeah, buying an email list is probably not a good idea because you are never sure of its authenticity, and other consequences that come with it.

I would agree with the other replies on this one. I'm using SimplyCast for my Email marketing and they don't allow any purchased lists or they will cancel the account.

I've researched other companies and they all have the same policies about purchased lists being considered SPAM.

Basically you will want to have a sign up form on your web site, social media and anywhere else that you can. The double opt in is the best practice these days and the response rates are the proof.

Even if another company is sending the emails for you I can almost guarantee that the emails are going straight to junk and never being read. Take a look at your spam folder sometime and look how many emails are there. I bet you have no idea how these companies got your email and yet there are hundreds if not thousands of emails in your junk folder. These are likely from a harvested list that someone spent good money to buy.

mrmatt, I've done both and had good results. It's all about the source of email addresses.

With email I'd recommend looking for industry publications, not large mailing companies like infousa. Publications promote themselves to new businesses (just opened) and then sell that same list as a lead source. I've found this to be more common with B2C businesses - retail, restaurants, etc.

    Matt,

There are many solo ads out there that will send your ad for you to their list for a fee. A lot of them will guarantee you a curtain number of unique visitors. So you are buying unique visitors.

To buy a list and then send them what ever offers you want, that is not the way to go. They just don't know who you are.
