14 year old brother looking to start a business

Looking for ideas for my much younger brother to start a business this summer. These last few days we have been brainstorming ideas for him to do.. were having trouble on deciding what would be best for him ...

We have talked about several different avenues, such as mowing lawns getting 20 to 30 customers and taking care of them to essentially get reoccurring income weekly..

Possible a coupon book business starting a county restaurant deal book .. selling for 20 30 maybe even 40 dollars not really sure what a good price point would be .. I have checked and can get these made for around $2 a copy .. not sure what would be best to sell rather door to door, business to business etc.

and last bust not least a window cleaning company again getting some loyal monthly customers ..

open to ideas and opinions from the warrior members going to start a business on one of these in the next month or so thanks for the input!!

I guess the first question would be, what does he want to do? Does he have interest in mowing lawns, or when it comes to starting a deal book, does he want to go door to door being the salesman?

With window washing, you have very little expense to get going. What is the area that he's in like? Will there be enough business for him to walk around and do the jobs, or will they be spread out requiring transportation? Does he have transportation? I think that you might find some small places like a local barber shop to hire a kid to wash windows, but larger places like chain restaurants are going to want someone insured and of legal working age, one would imagine might be the case. Residential window washing isn't something that people do on a very frequent basis, in my experience. Maybe annually, or in the spring/fall. There's much more complication in doing residential windows.

Kids mowing lawns has been a staple for many. I can see people hiring him to cut their grass. I've lived in my house for 8-9 years and no kids ever asked to cut my lawn. I have someone that does it now, but you don't see many kids out hustling in my area. If I saw one, I'd love to put them to work and reward the hustle.

Just a few considerations. I cut a few lawns when I was a kid and made some spending money. I washed windows for a friend's business and had a few accounts of my own in my cleaning business over the past 14 years, here and there. There are lots of ways to make money, much depends on what he is inclined to do and what opportunities fit those inclinations and the circumstances that he's presented with.

"were having trouble on deciding what would be best for him"

Why is that? What trouble are you having deciding?

What is your brother interested in doing?

    What skills does he possess?

    What is his work history?

He's 14 years old? He wants to make money. Kudos to him for even having the thought to make money on his own, but let's be real and say he shouldn't be planning years down the road. He also shouldn't be selling advertising or anything remotely gimmicky because he won't be taken seriously. Tell him to buy candy bars in bulk and sell them around school (gotta be sneaky nowadays) or stick to good old fashioned labor (lawns, raking leaves, snow shoveling) for dollars. He'll make some money and develop a work ethic that others simply don't have.

Is he a gamer if so why not set up a gaming blog start writing with reviews and have affiliate links related to gaming ie. cheats etc. there's a few good gaming affiliate offers in affiliate sections of this forum.
Your ideas are good but I would bet at 14 those ideas wouldn't last with him or may get taken advantaged of by customers.

First of all, I think it's great that he wants to get started in business! And good on you for helping him, he'll have a huge head-start over his peers.

I agree with many of the replies on this thread. He should definitely start off small and in an industry that 14 year old boys have pre-existing knowledge in (gaming, TV shows, sport).

Fantastic that your brother wants to start a business, especially as schools dont teach entrepreneurship. Obviously it must be something that he wants to do and finds interesting, however building apps has become drag and drop simple and lends itself to creative thought so perhaps that should be on the suite of options available to your brother.

You are definitely entitled to your opinion but I'd like to inform you that it sucks.

Here we have a show called the Shark Tank and the latest episode was all about children entrepreneurs who had AWESOME businesses and yeah some even got major funding from BILLIONAIRES.

Some of those businesses have a better then average chance of changing the world but you'd rather they start a garden in their back yard? Seriously?

This person is running a lot of ads over the Internet
to this video on how to make your own garden...

        https://www.crisiseducation.com/land...FckWMgodDzwAEg

The difference is the poster is thinking as a consumer,
not a marketer. Another way of putting it, the video owner is
selling shovels to the gold miners.

        Best,

Actually, there's a business in that "home garden" idea.

Most people don't have time or interest for creating a garden, but would love the idea of having one.

As a way of getting started, the OP's brother could offer to come in and set those up in people's backyards.

Doesn't have to be a large operation. He could offer 3 or 4 different garden combination packages, at various prices.

If he grew the plants himself, he'd have very little cost involved.

He could begin now getting information out there in the neighborhoods and taking orders.

He'd then know exactly how many plants were needed.

This is a million dollar business idea if followed up properly.

Edit: Why does the OP always seem to disappear in these kinds of threads?

Well, the OP has been here since 2012, and despite this thread still has zero posts, so maybe he didn't disappear, but rather he never existed.

Me too. Go watch the wso threads. Tons of reviews left by people with zero posts and longevity on the forums. Now, I think that wso thread posts don't count on the tally, but the number of people running around with zero is odd at times. Maybe they somehow have the counter turned off in their profiles. I've never checked. It is odd though how many people hit and run on here with sometimes really good and compelling questions.

Several areas on the forum don't tally up the count when you post.

I know that the wso and the off topic section is like that.
I don't know if any other sections are like that.

  • I don't think it's too early but you have to be completely sure that he is interested in going into business. Some kids just want to work for a bit of extra money and there's nothing wrong with that. It teaches kids the value of money and an honest day's work.

But as a parent, I do worry on how a business would distract a 14 year old from his studies. As his older brother, just make sure that he doesn't go overboard and disregard everything else.

  • I will recommend that he follows his hobby that will really work than looking at something that is not his hobby as he might leave it on the way to his success.

Meaning you he can start a website where he will be sharing his hobby tips and monetize it with adsense.

I'm glad your brother has the ambition to start and operate a business, most 14 year olds do not. I wish my son who will be 14 in June had the ambition to do that.

If it were me I would stick to the service industry. He can still learn all about salesmanship while providing a needed service. here are a few:

    Lawn mowing
    Lawn clean up
    Garage/Basement cleaning/organizing
    Pet sitting
    Dog walking
    pooper scooper
    Garden weeding
    Babysitting
    painting
    flyer distribution
    Car washing
    Etc.

I know a kid who paints funny faces on rocks and sells them to those in his small town. Considering how small the town is he's making good money. It's different and it brings smiles to people's faces. You can either find smooth and odd shaped rocks, or get a rock tumbler to put them in to prepare them for painting, acrylic paints go for about $1 a bottle at craft stores, he can use cheap paint brushes, and rocks are free. If your brother has any artistic bent at all he may like that idea.
