Forum Software Recommendations

I am looking for a forum software solution as an add on to a site I have. The two most important things for me are:
  1. SEO - posts have to rank
  2. Facebook Login Capability

Any suggestions you all can offer would be much appreciated! Thanks!

XenForo or SMF (free) if you want a more traditional forum, and bbPress if you want something simple you can use on WordPress sites.

    Edit: No SMF!

SMF is NOT good for SEO.

My bad . I remembered there were a few forums that weren't good for SEO but I thought SMF wasn't one. Too many different acronyms and "BB" in forum names

From what I understand vbulletin is the one with the best out of box seo.
I might have that wrong .. rest assured Nathan will let me know if I do.

The others require plug ins for that.
Most of them have free plug ins for facebook login.

Personally I use Mybb. Has plugins for both. I like it a lot.

However ... IamNameless strait up laughed at me when he found out
that is what I am using ... told me I would eventually regret it.

He has a lot of forum experience and helped me out quite a bit.
So make sure you pester him ... reward him for his hard work ...

I've used almost all. The best in my opinion is vBulletin...it supports the 700,000 plus members at WF.

My associate, Dien Rice, also uses it at sowpub.com. BUT, both of these have been around a long time...usually, a post at Seeds of Wisdom, with a good headline and relevant copy can be indexed within 24 hours and frequently shows up on the first page of google searches too.

I think, Google likes sites that have been around for a long time and gives extra weight to that and relevant content too.

So, it make take awhile for a new forum to get rapidly indexed.

Also vBulletin has some good hosts, with a history of hosting forums. And my understanding is the latest version supports Facebook log in, but you might want to confirm that with them.

Did you decide to run your own forum in the funding niche?

Don't use SMF as already stated; I had one up for awhile and it had problems.

I also would go with vBulletin.

vBulletin is overall the best, period. You're right

Don't make the same mistake using mybb.

Well, any hosting company will work with vBulletin. The type of hosting plan you will need, depends on the membership levels and activity. Not recommended to be on a shared server. Anything over 1,000 members and moderate activity will have a lot of time outs on a shared environment, not to mention, very easy to be attacked.

Facebook connect, can be used with any platform. You could probably find a freelancer to integrate it for $200 or less no matter what kind of platform you use.

For vbulletin, there's been an add on for FB Connect since 2008, and it's free, you just need the vbulletin license to download it.
