Telemarketing can be an effective means for a business to make sales and increase profit potential. This sales method allows small businesses to expand outside of the local business area. Despite giving businesses the opportunity to reach out to more prospective customers, telemarketing can take longer to get positive sales results, according to Entrepreneur. However, connecting with customers generates leads, some of which eventually turn into sales.

Hence, in my opinion, companies should really consider telemarketing. Although, it depends on the type/nature of the business but I think telemarketing can surely help any business.

Actually, this should probably be moved to the offline marketing section, but I'll reply anyway.

Telemarketing will never go away. I've been telemarketing business to business off and on for over 20 years and it's just as effective as it's always been. Some people have made it more difficult for those who are honest, but it's still an easy way to make a decent living.

The key points are to treat people with respect. Listen to their needs and do your best to solve their problems. Do that and you'll soon go from "salesman" to "trusted friend" in no time.

I have people that I've done business with for many years. I now call them every 30 days like clockwork, and they call me too when they need something.

Building a list of prospects and customers offline is really no different than doing it online. You simply contact a lot of people, build relationships with those that are nice (I don't deal with jerks - ever!), be respectful, focus on their needs and contact them regularly.

I appreciate your answer. As you said these are the skills, but some telecallers or marketing people don't even know how to talk. Those who have marketing skills they achieve a lot like success, money & good relations, but those who don't know how to talk with people they creates lots of crisis...

            Hi,

When you're first starting out I always recommend using a proven script. That's how most others started. A script tells you exactly what to say and when to say it. It can also help you to overcome objections and close sales.

I still use product descriptions when speaking to customers and prospects. I offer thousands of products and there's no way I'm going to know them all by heart. I just tell them that "I'm going to read what it says verbatim so I make sure I'm getting you the right thing". Do you see how I'm "assuming the sale" there?

Anyway, I don't know what market you're thinking of working in, but I highly recommend that you get a proven script that you can work with and stick to it until you're comfortable enough to modify it to your personality.

Telemarketing is a a great tool for contacting a lot of potential customers. Done correctly, your telemarketers will build a relationship with your prospects and record 'touch points' for future call backs... I.e Contract End Dates.

Telemarketing used to be at large few years ago. Not all companies are doing telemarketing these days and not many companies prefer telemarketing now a days.
It's a old fashion marketing which has gone down with internet boom.

As I believe, more and more companies are turning away from telemarketing, because bad practises from the past made it too obtrusive. Personally, I hate them like hell

I strongly suspect that the people, above, saying they "hate" it, are actually thinking of "cold calling" specifically, rather than telemarketing in general. Cold calling is of course only a very small part of it.

Two people I know - one from high school, one from university - now have careers in telemarketing (one is now "telemarketing manager" of a fair-sized company), and are probably two of the very highest-earning people I know under the age of 25.

I think perhaps "cold calling" may be in decline, these days, especially with so many countries now having increasing laws and regulations about it, but telemarketing in general certainly seems to be one of the real growth industries.

The Benefits are reduced outside sales force. Reaching more targeted demographics. Maintaining relationships.

SOME companies prefer telemarketing because it is a cost effective model for their business.

Here in Akron, OH we have several successful telemarketing companies and Direct Marketing companies who use telemarketing.

The University of Akron is on the forefront of Direct Marketing Education thanks in part to contributions from local telemarketers.

Their new stadium, the InfoCision stadium is named because the guy who owns the company, a telemarketing company, gave millions to the University.

Done right, it is a tested and proven business model.

PS. I've written many telemarketing scripts, and the script is the KEY to successful telmarketing along with the list of contacts.

Having built a six figure financial planning business by starting off cold calling, I may be a bit biased. Granted, this was before the do-not-call list.

Alexa is right, telemarketing and cold calling are not the same thing and while cold calling could be part of telemarketing, there's a lot that goes to it (when done properly).

The main benefits of telemarketing are obtaining leads at a lower cost than traditional marketing. Radio and television ads can get really expensive.

I have a client who makes a very nice living buying very targeted leads, having an auto contact these lists, and has a team of telemarketers who answer the phone and they sell home security systems.

The machine makes the outbound calls and the people answer the calls for people asking for more information or asking to be removed from the calling list. It was pretty amazing to see the whole system work.

Groupon is a good example of a company built with the assistance of telemarketing

Yes, autodialers can be extremely helpful because you can set the number of calls per agent. You'd adjust that based on your response from those leads, that day ... but the idea is the lower the answer rate, the more numbers you'll want the dialer to call out at once.

So you may have 3 calls placed for every one agent ... when someone picks up, the call is routed to one of the agents, either randomly, or the person who was waiting the longest for the call, or the best agent .. however you want to set it. So you may have 10 numbers out for 3 people taking calls ... and lets say 4 people pick up, and no agents are available, the extra person will just hear that all agents are busy, wait for the next one ...

Also, you can do autodialing with an automated message or with a live pickup. Live pickup far less trouble with DNC lists. Robocalls however are asking for trouble these days unless its a political call. Robocalls are when you pick up and hear an offer ... and the press 1 to speak to someone or 2 to come off the list.

The FTC and state AG's take violations of the DNC list and robocalling very seriously make sure you cover all the angels of whatever you get into. The press release section of FTC.gov and your states AG's website are great resources to see what crazy shit people are doing and who is getting in trouble for it. The most aggressive state being New York http://www.ag.ny.gov/press-releases

I personally think the telemarketing business is dieing down because people simply don`t have enough time to sit down and listen to someone try to sell them stuff over the phone

I`ve done telemarketing before and didn`t land a single sale, no matter how pro I was at it
