Hmm... interesting question. What are the negative effects of marketing in general? They must be one and the same, right?

The only thing that comes to mind is that the more marketing you do,the more your competitors become aware of you. You lose the stealthiness of the obscure marketer that is able to quietly pick off your best customer before you are even aware they exist.

SEM is a very beneficial service for marketing. It provides high page rank and website traffic to boost your sales. The only drawback it has is it is costly and it takes long time to give result.

      Hi Michael,

I would say that it is only "costly" to learn. Once you know what you are doing it isn't costly, it's very profitable.

Again, it may take a long time to learn how to do it properly, once you know what you are doing you can get great results very quickly.

If you want to shorten the learning curve, hire a professional to either run your campaigns, or to teach you how to do it.

For me the only downside of SEM are the expenses. I had cases when I run AdWords campaigns for example, with little to no success.

I'd echo the above... the expense.

We're talking the expense of reading ebook after ebook learning how to run PPC campaigns properly. And then the expensive of buying PPC traffic once you actually know what you're doing. No matter how good you are with PPC, clicks still cost something.

When I start a new PPC campaign, I expect to lose money on it for at least the first three months. This allows me to collect lots of data, work out which keywords convert and which don't, and then I take it from them there.

The expense is one thing but if you are generating positive ROI then ppc or any positively geared marketing is good.

PPC should not take three months to analyse data as you should be modifying and improving pretty much as much as you can dedicate time to it.

Tip is test the ads, headline etc in other platforms , Facebook is good for quick test and then use PPC with most successful headline tested in FB. Then within one week or less you should see results, cull negative words and improve week on week.

The negative is that competitors can see that you are consistently targeting specific areas and that can lead to increased competition but then this is what business is all about.

The only real negative may be diminishing returns as you neglect specific campaigns over more successful ones and you realise you should have cut the loss earlier.

It is a bit like share trading when you see the signs that the market has turned but you continue to hang on even though the circumstances have changed.

Cut early and try something else.

Becoming lazy is probably the negative.
