Both work well for different situations.

Some of my sites I use my real name, others a "character" name.

The thing is: loyalty comes by being transparent and honest which I have found does not...

That could be a bit misleading I think. In the early days when Mark was starting out he would have spent a lot of time on forums, blogs, chatting to other coders, etc.
