I just can't understand it

I've wasted over three hours today trying to upload an image to a test site - yes, that's right upload an ordinary image via FTP.

My test site is Nail Salon

You will note the Facebook and Twitter icons.

Those icons were originally named "facebook.png" and "twitter.png". I added them to my index file, and in design mode the images were there, but when I uploaded that index file, having already uploaded the two images to my "images" folder on the web, the images would not show up.

Frustrated after half an hour, I renamed the images as "fbicon.png" and "twittericon.png", changed the reference in my index file (which showed the images in Dreamweaver as being there), uploaded the images and my index file to the web, and, no difference, they wouldn't appear on the site.

Ahter another hour or so of trying to figure out what was going on, I went back to the original template on which I was basing my site. I noticed that on the template Quentin had called the facebook image "icon_64", so I renamed my images as "icon_64" and "icon_65", as you will see if you look at the source code of my index page, uploaded the images and my changed index file, and lo and behold the images were there!

I swear that all I did was change the names of the two files.

While writing this, I just had the thought that maybe Quentin had the same trouble, and that was why he called the Facebook icon "icon_64". I might pm him.

Anyone got any ideas? It's no big deal now, as the images are now up on my site, but I'm somewhat curios as to why they wouldn''t load as "facebook.png" and "twitter.png".

I used that as many people like to change social icons to their own likes so for example I use wmfp as this is my facebook handle but you can leave it or renae it to anything you want.

The other reason is Facebook gets a bit narky about using their name so I keep away.

  • Hey Peter would love to give this a look but the page is not loading - are you sure the URL is correct? It seems to be stuck looking for "getafree.mobi"...

Perhaps the files were originally uploaded in ascii mode, instead of binary (ftp client should have managed this.. but.. I dunno...)?

Alternatively it could have been permissions, or perhaps cAsE sensitivity (depending on your web servers configuration)

These days I don't bother with FTP any more - I stick with SCP, as I need ssh open for admin anyway, I may as well just use it for everything

      Cheers,
      Michael

No, I just changed the name of the file - both the original file, and my renamed one were all lower case.

Sorry emptee, the abbreviations are way over my head (I do know what FTP is, though!)

I already thanked Quentin for replying, thereby dashing one theory I had.

It's really tough to say where the real issue was, but for sure it has nothing to do with what you called them.

Naming them what they are: "facebook" or "twitter" doesn't make a difference in whether they show up or not. And yes, technically the names are trademarked but that's irrelevant to them showing up or not.

Images not showing up are typically a tiny overlooked detail.
Capital vs lowercase, an underscore, period, png or jpg, incorrect path, or the image not properly FTP'ing to the server.
After you ftp and flush the browser cache, reload the site and view the source code to see what's there.
If it's not what you changed it to, there's either a caching issue or FTP issue.

Glad you got it working but you can name them whatever you please.
