Updating from 2.8 to 2.8.1 should not req. a db upgrade, does it...?
It should just be a simple FTP-job.

upgrading from 2.8 to 2.8.1 can be done from within the dashboard by clicking the upgrade link...

however before you ugrade always always do these steps first:
      1. backup your database...get a backup plugin so that you can do it from within your dashboard
      2. Deactivate all your plugins
      3. Once your WordPress has been upgraded, then re-activate your plugins.
If you encounter problems after an upgrade chances are that one or more plugins are incompatible with your version of WordPress, in which case de-activate each plugin one by one until you can identify which one is giving you problems.

It also could be that your theme is not compatible with the latest version of WordPress too. I remember having to get a client of mine to go and download an update to his Thesis theme when we upgraded from 2.7.1 to 2.8

If you paid for your theme, usually the theme designer will have an upgrade available. If it was a free theme, you can write to the theme designer but don't count on an upgrade.

      Good luck!

      • Thanks for all your input, the problem turned out to be a plugin I had downloaded. I downloaded the previous version and still couldn't get into the admin area. Deleted a particular plugin and hey presto, problem solved, phew!
