PROGRAMMING

Hi guys,
I was having some issues with hostgator. They have me set up a new account and sent me the backup of my site. I have received my backup in compressed file. But I have no idea what to do with it. Can you guide me in this regard?

That compressed archive should contain both website files and database tables.

You should extract that archive and figure out which are the website files and which is the database backup file (should be fairly easy).

Then, you should upload website files with a FTP client (I recommend you FileZilla if you don't have already a FTP client installed).

Login in to your hosting Cpanel (usually at: yoursiteurl/cpanel)

Create a new MySQL database, go to phpMyAdmin, select your created database, import your database backup file and that's all.

  To add, the actual website files will be in a folder called "public_html".
  The compressed file is probably a complete cpanel backup.

Why are you trying to restore the account/site manually instead of asking your host to restore the account for you from backup?

You'll have an option on cPanel to backup. When it's done, download the .tar.gz file
