advice on rendering text

Currently my method of rendering text is to create a text mesh in Blender and exporting info obj....and then loading that text into my openGL c++ program..but when I want to render a different font style I have to completely create a new set of text mesh and export it....that's a tedious process...lyric finder
but it is not a problem if I don't have to change the font frequently...second it's memory consuming.... a single letter has approx 100 verts...if I render a word 10 letter long then I have to render 1000 vertices for that word alone...so is there any way to render it efficiently??
