Thoughts on learning web development

I've always had the desire to learn web development, HTML, CSS, JAVAscript and the like. I'm still considering taking some courses and see where it takes me. Teamtreehouse seems like a solid way to get started and be involved in a community.

BUT...

With countries like India, Philippines etc taking over the markets a lot and driving the price down and while I'm getting older (mid thirties) I'm not sure if it's worth getting in to.

Please share your thoughts?

    Being American and native english speaker will always help you a great deal when you look for jobs in person. You'll always be worth more than the Indian guy thousands of miles away simply because you: 1) speak english clearly, 2) are a phone-call away or can even be met in person, 3) work on the same time-zone as your client/customer 4) always been seen as more trusthworthy because your clients can relate to you.

    So it's never too late to learn but with that said, I think you should start learning and if you find it not fun at all, then don't bother and go learn another skill. You'd be surprised at how much a "non-coder" can get done using community help, hooks, snippets, and filters out there.

    It is never too late for someone to learn something new. There will always be high competition anywhere. I think web development is a great skill to learn since with this part of your skills it will not be hard for you to jump into other stuff that is related to it. You can start off by doing self-studies. You can try some free one's from Udemy or invest into a paid learning site like Lynda.

    I agree, regardless of your age, nationality, etc.. you can still opt to learn new skills like web development. I know someone in his 30's and still managed to learn it. Not that profiting from it yet since he's still in the process of studying online courses but he is able to implement it slowly and manages to build his portfolio from time to time. So don't hold back. Even if Asians are atop of the field you'll never know what you can do unless you try it.

    If your goals require you to learn web development then give it a shot, you got nothing to lose. Else its just another distraction for you. There are certain advantages of you being American but that does not makes you can take shortcut. Put in the necessary effort and move forward.

    All that is required of you is the zeal and drive to learn something new, be it wed development or whatever. Put those excuses(Indians and Philippines taking the market) behind you and take action by making out the time to start from somewhere.

    There are lots of resources online to get you started. I just started taking some courses in Mobile Apps development too.

    I would say yes. Go for it. Learning those languages not only ensures you to be working with them it also ensures you to pick up additional frameworks that businesses require sometimes. HTML, CSS and Javascript are the building blocks of the web and since the web is not going anywhere it seems these languages will stick as well.

    It is never to late to learn web development. There is too much demand for the web developers in the market. Where ever you will go yo will always find competition and if you want to become a developer then you have to work hard. You should start by learning HTML, CSS and JavaScript. It is better if you take a course and with the course you can take help from codeacadmy, udemy, StackOverflow and lynda sites.

    Pretty much sure you have the advantage, especially if you'd be really good at it. You'll get more opportunities there than people from other countries like Philippines and India.

    I think it is always a great investment. Don't just see it as an obstacle. See it as a pair of stairs you only then went the first step on. You don't know what's waiting for you in the future.

    As people we learn throughout our whole lives, it is safe to say that learning these languages is only a step towards more.
