Do I need to Point server to live domain and dev.domain for my software?

Hi everyone here, I want to host my software on Google cloud hosting.
Do I need to point the server to live domain say [kob.com] and [dev.kob.com]?
Please help to guide me concerning this issue?

    Hi, thank you for your reply. I don't have much experience with it, but according to the information I read, it says it good to point server to the domain and also to dev. domain. But I don't really know if the dev. domain is for testing.
