I don't use either one, although they are both viable technologies.

I program with PHP & JavaScript to build AJAX-type interfaces. I find it to be a powerful combination that gives the user a "desktop-like" experience.

It can be hell though, because JS is client-side. It will work for Forefox, and then not work for IE. Or it work work for both, and then not work in Chrome, or Opera

JS will work on any browser if the script for the browser is mentioned in it.

I think Java is better for web application bcos its open source and also platform independent. Its more effective than any other.

I'm not sure what you mean. I've never had one copy of Ajax code ever work perfectly on all browsers and versions all at once before, ever.

Well you obviously don't have very much experience then. Sure, there are slight differences between the browsers, but it is relatively easy to make JavaScript work across all browsers, especially if you use a library.

Java isn't open source, it is owned and maintained by Sun.

.NET is not a programming language, it is a framework for other languages, especially C#

    Dear Harry,

    Thank you for the Question.

This Q can have multiple meanings, so it depends on
what you are trying to accomplish.

What type of 'Web Application' are you attempting to execute?

Is it a visual application (video?) or a database application
(visitor retention / email list) type application?
(or ___________ Fill in the blank... )

I'm a php / mySQL type of programmer and avoid ANYTHING M$
(for web applications) like the plague, including .net and .asp ...

So, it all boils down to what you want to do on your site.

    Thanks,
    Christopher

It is better to choose java as java comes free in various areas whereas when microsoft technologies is used you need to go for license. Java script more robust compared to .net.

Just in case anyone is confused, Java and JavaScript are two completely different technologies. The original poster was asking about Java (a robust proprietary programming language built and maintained by Sun) not JavaScript (the programming language of browsers, with standards written for it but not always followed).

I've developed for over 2 years using java (including jsp and servlets) and it's a bit of a chore to be honest in relation to c#. I now mainly use c# for both web and desktop apps I develop. I do use some php but still prefer .net, specially with all the debugging tools built into visual studio.

Java is more powerful programming language that we can use to write the applications and applets we need for the web development and for the native electronic devices. ASP is good and we can use it develop the web pages and its gives you the complete GUI system for the sake of development.
