Problem with .htaccess??? Not sure...

HELP!

I'm working on a blog for a client at http://www.redhotrhythm.com.au/blog/ which was built by somebody else and OMG it's painful!

I can't install plugins without entering username and password etc amongst other things, and I changed the permalinks and now I get the error, "The requested URL /blog/page name/ was not found"

I've checked and the new URL is the same as what comes up when I hover over each item in the navbar.

I'm sure this has something to do with the .htaccess file but I can't find it when I log in using Filezilla!

It's hosted with SmartyHost and it is rubbish - there's not even a file manager that I can find in there!

Can somebody help? :confused:

    You most likely have not updated .htaccess, as you have said.

    You should be able to view it where it was installed too - i.e in /blog/

    From memory, though, filezilla will not show 'hidden' files by default.

    EDIT: Looks like the option has moved since i last used it - try this to enable it instead:

    Well that's starnge that you can't find it.. try to use goftp and the moment you find it, change permission to writable.. this is a common probolem in changing permalinks...

    It certainly sounds like a .htaccess issue Michelle, either your FTP client (Filezilla in this case) is not displaying hidden files or the FTP account you're using to access the site has insufficient permissions.

    One thought is that this oddball hosting plan you described might have it's own Password Protect function, you might check for that. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with SmartyHost, and from what you describe I'm kind of glad!

      Thanks guys for your help. I downloaded the latest version of FileZilla and was able to show the hidden files, but there was no .htaccess file in the /blog/ directory??

      I changed the .htaccess file in the root directory to writable, but still no luck.

      I'm thinking it's just a dodgy hosting solution - or it could have something to do with the setup...??

      Will keep at it... :confused:

    Hi Michelle (nice to see a fellow ozzie on the forums)

    Another thing that could be worth checking out, is to see id there are any .passwd files loadting around as well. If there are, then rename to to something else, and see if that changes things.

    Check for .htaccess & .passwd files in both the blog directory as well as the sites root directory.

    Try renamining them something different (so that you don't loose them) and then see it makes a difference. But it could be as you say simply "junk" hosting..

    Nah there were no .passwd files in there.

    Well what I ended up doing was paying my web guy to fix it. He's kind of fixed it, although I prefer to use custom permalinks, so will get onto him about that!

    We ended up reverting the permalinks back to the default, although this isn't ideal. I really think he should change host providers!
