Addon domains setup: public_html or root or separate account?

When setting up addon domains (in cpanel) the default structure is for the system to put the addon domain in the /public_html folder of the main domain. So, if your main site is at /home/myaccount/public_html then the addon domain will look like /home/myaccount/public_html/addondomain.com

What is the general practice here? Do you prefer to use this structure (addons inside public_html), or do you over-ride it and put your addon domains outside the public_html and into the root folder, so your addons look like /home/mainsite/addondomain.com ?

or

Do you prefer a VPS/reseller account where you create a new account for every single new domain you register?

    Hi,

    I use shared hosting and put my add-on domains inside my public_html account. All my domains are registered separately from my hosting account (in case my host goes down I can just switch DNS settings at my domain registrar).

    When using addon domains (or parked domains) using c-panel the system basically makes whatever folder you create the root for that particular domain.

    So when I log in via FTP I click on Public_HTML and then see a list of folders containing all my websites.
