Can I replace the WP index.php with my own?

Hi, I am wondering if replacing the standard index.php file with my own is okay when using wordpress?

I want to put my sales page as the home page for a while but dont want to funk thinks up.

Or is a 301 redirect a better option?

    I'd create a sales page as a "Page" in wordpress. Next create a blank page (not a post) with the title "Blog" but do not put any content in it. Then go to Settings - Reading - and click Front page displays - static page. Set the "front page" to your sales page and set the "posts page" to the new blank Blog page.

    Then you're set with a sales page as your home page and a menu item called blog that will take people to the blog section.

    When you're done with the sales page, you can set it back to the original settings.

    By the way - if you replace index.php with something of your own - it will hose your whole site.

      That sounds great except that I need the sales page not to look like its on the blog. I

      Thanks for telling me about replacing it though, I was actually going to do it today it no one replied! So thanks.

      I am going to try a 301 redirect and see how that works, I am just worried that something may go wrong because it is the homepage, what with SEO implications.

    It looks like a pretty common need. You can do it if you make a page template That has a different look from the site - but you would need to know theme development.

    I am working on a theme product that has great flexibility and can do what you want and MUCH more. It'll be offered in a WSO. If you'd like, I'll let you know when it's done (probably in June).

        if you need something more "right away" I'd be happy to help whip up a page template for you. Just shoot me a copy of your index.php so I can see how your template is configured. It's pretty much just a copy and paste job but some themes like to get a little complicated.

          Thanks for the offer! Thats very nice of you, although as of now i have just done a 301 redirect, I only needed it temporary, just to test the sales aspect.

          So I think the 301 will work, and if I ever need it permanent someone pm'd me a plugin by Robert Plank that supposedly does exactly what I want ... with the same theme and all!!

          But thank you very much, I would thank you with the button but it is gone
