    I had a similar problem and it had something to do with the version of PHP on my local web server because when I uploaded it to my hosting account it worked ok and the ticks etc appeared where they were supposed to.

        Changing PHP version, if that's the issue, can be done but your server/host/admin generally does that. Off the top of my head the PHP kernel needs to be 5, and if it hasn't been installed there's generally a reason.

        If you are running your own servers, great. It can be done.

        One other piece of general knowledge is that you may wish to VIEW your wordpress customization in a completely different browser. I have found that being logged in as Admin will seriously mess with the display, unless a different browser (one that doesn't see the login status) is employed. Also, that means just opening a new instance of a browser may not work in some cases. I use IE to check my work, Firefox to edit. I don't like IE, but it's a good backup browser since I haven't figured out how to kill it, burn it, and send it back to its owner.
