PHP script installer and auto-updater

The title says it all.

Any recommendations? I don't want it to be OS dependent (eg only Windows).

    Do you mean like: a local desktop application that contains the PHP sources, reads the FTP user/pass+MySQL user/pass/db and does all the copying, unzipping, setting up, so as to just open the page and heve it working?

    Or a server-side script that could take care of this. In this case, it's OS independent by default... since PHP is quite platform independent.
